Read all the articles on the web already. Am building a 1/72 DC-3 and I want a natural metal finish. Using Alclad II, but really have not decided on airframe aluminum or just regular aluminum. The airframe A. is a high shine finish requiring a gloss black paint, the regular A. is not.

I primed the model with Floquil flat grey and now I must decide if I am gonna use the airframe or the regular aluminum shade.

My question is: I read that Tamiya TS14 gloss black synthetic laquer is OK. Wrong! I tried spraying it on the props which will be chrome, and to my surprise, I found many bubbles on the surface which had to be sanded down and fixed. A labor intensive process especially if I have to do this on the DC-3 which in 1/72 scale is quite big.

Which enamel or laquer do you guys suggest for use with Alclad II? Also, If I decide to leave the model grey, should I shoot it with Future to give it a glossy finish before I spray the Alclad II?

Thanks!

Long John Silver WIP

Hi everybody!

I'm fairly new in figure painting and I'd like to improve, so my idea is to post here my work in the figure I'm currently building to receive suggestions from all of you :)

Here's the figure I've picked, it's the Verlinden version of John Long Silver pirate from Treasure Island bood (that I read when I was a kid :) ), it's 120mm and made of resin:

Here are the parts (it even includes a map! :)

Here's the body already built and primed (I haven't attached the hands yet because it would be difficult to paint some parts with the hands attached):

the head with a very diluted firrst layer of paint:

The base is almost finished, it needs more work on the rocks (they don't look right), I've used oils to simulate wood in the chest and the rim of the base, it's still wet so I have to wait until it dries before fixing the rocks.

Any comments, suggestions are welcome :)

I do have a question though, what type of white paint do you all use? I've heard good things about Halford's Appliance White, but can't find it, unless they've renamed it Halford's Gloss White. Are there any other good white sprays, Humbrol or Tamiya for example? Help would be greatly appreciated

That's Amore (Italian GB) Jan 1-June 30 2012

Hi gang. I learned a lot in the Blitzkrieg GB about French armor, so I decided to start up another GB. I propose an Italian-themed build with any Italian armor, plane or ship. Date to be determined based on interest. A badge will be created later on.

Below are a list of the more common subjects of WW II with the Ariete MBT thrown in for good measure.

Armor ideas:

L3/33 Tankette

L3/35 Tankette

L6/40 Light tank

M11/39 Medium tank

M13/40 Medium tank

M14/41 Medium tank

M15/42 Medium tank

P/40 Heavy tank

Semovente 75/18 SPG

Semovente 75/34 SPG

Semovente 90/53 SPG

Autoblinda 40/41 Armored cars

Ariete MBT

Airplane ideas:

Fiat G.50 Freccia

Fiat G.55 I Centauro

Macchi 200

Macchi 202 Folgore

Macchi 205V Veltro

Reggiane Re 2000 Falco

Reggiane Ariete

Reggiane Re 2002

Reggiane Ariete 2002

Reggiane Saggitario

Savoia Marchetti SM.79 Bomber

Ship ideas:

Roma BB

Littorio/Italia BB

Vittorio Veneto BB

Andrea Doria BB

Conte Di Cavour BB

The guidelines for the GB are as follows:

You can enter anytime from when it starts to when it's finished

Any scale

Any AM item

All kits must be NIB or very lightly started (10%)

No crossovers of other GB's

A badge will be created, but can only be obtained for a completed build within the time frame

Please share info about the kit and have fun, fun, fun!

This is my contribution to the That's Amore GB. Tamiya's Semovente from the early 70's, not the later one with upgrades.

I picked the kit up for $5 and put another $44 in upgrades: the barrel from RB models, and the tracks from Model Victoria.

The kit came with Italeri tracks subbed in and they were way too short. I was pointed out these resin tracks from Model Victoria and got a great deal from a seller. They snap together and hold very well. I didn't break a single link. Lot's of cleanup on about a third of the tracks.

In hindsight, I wish I got AM lenses, but they were spendy and initially I wasn't going to put a lot of money into it, just the barrel, for the kits were terrible.

I sprayed Model Master Armor Sand Acrylics. I painted the camo by hand with a couple of spotter brushes with Pollyscale Field Grey. Various pinwashes and washes with raw umber, sienna, ochre. I'm not happy with the weathering of the tracks which was a wash of CMK pigments of dark and light dust. The pigments work great by the way and are about half the cost of MIG. The tank was given a light washing and drybrushing with pigments too.

This build is open to all nightfighters and night attack aircraft, all eras. How I define what is eligible for this build is that the aircraft is a hunter, not a level bomber. If you have a question about this, please ask.

The rules are the standard fare:

Any scale, all after market all the way to no aftermarket.

Crossovers welcome

Started builds are ok

Please post works in progress

Be social, and have fun!

Here is the badge. Feel free to grab one when you start. Thanks Doog for the design.

Is your name not up here? Let me know through private message as I have two great builds I am participating in at this time and I may miss a post. Thanks everyone!

***UPDATE- Official Group Build Tag:

And for those who do not finish their build in time here will be your special tag once the Group Build is over:

B-36 Peacemaker Group Build - Now Open!

Hi everyone, I`m going to be starting a B-36 Peacemaker GB in couple of weeks, and wanted to invite anyone who would be interested in participating.

Since this is a large build, there will be some modifications on the process vs your typical GB paramenters:

1. There is no official time frame other than the start date: December 1, 2011. This GB will be ongoing with no official end date - if there ever is one.

2. There are no parameters or restrictions on the models. They can be any scale, any manufacture, scratch build of any type or of any material. Models can can range from 0% to already 100% complete. Models currently in other GB`s or were used in previous GB`s are allowed as well.

3. Everyone is invited to participate. If you dont plan on building, have built, or just have an interest in these planes, you are cordially invited to share your insite and knowledge! :)

The pre-start chat can be found in the Airplane Forum at:

http://cs.finescale.com/FSMCS/forums/t/142612.aspx

With that being said....

If you have one of these in your closet collecting dust and keep telling yourself you will build it "someday", now`s the time for that someday.

It looks pretty good and slightly more detailed than the old Italeri kit. The boomerang-shaped cover for the flotation system is gone, as it should be for an M109A2 and onward. As with Kinetic's M-ATV, the details look a little soft.

The tracks look so-so. The pieces around the sprockets and idlers look like they are indi-link with separate end connectors. Those areas look good. The long, straight pieces look to be one big piece with molded on end connectors that don't look as good. The road wheels and sprocket look nice. The idler looks really good with the lightening holes on them.

It also is supposed to have anti-slip molded on as well.

From the Lucky Model website:
"Kinetic 1/35 M109A2 Decal designed by Crossdelta Decals Decal printed by Cartograf S.r.l., Italy Length: 260mm Width: 90mm Height: 93mm Parts: 180+ Model Features: - 2 Muzzle Brake Options - Front Armor Plate Options for Both Early and Late Versions - External Details including Stowage Boxes and Turret Baskets - Recoil System and Breech Details - Open and Closed Hatches for Turret and Hull - Turret Hatch Details - Link and Length Tracks - Simplified Assembly Design"

These are said to be pre-production shots. We'll see how the final parts look. I hope it is much better than the old Italeri ones. I also hope they come out with a whole line of M108/M109s. An M992 FAASV would be nice too.

Here is the link:
http://www.luckymodel.com/scale.aspx?item_no=KI-K61006

Expected release is end of May.

Photos from The National Air & Space Museum

Hello All,

Recently I had the good fortune to spend a short time in the Smithsonian's National Air & Space Museum at the National Mall. I took a bunch of photos that I'd like to share. Here's the link to my collection:

Photos from The National Air & Space Museum

Here are a few photos from the set:

There are a bunch of detailed shots of the Me 109 and DB 605, here's an overall:

Of course, the star (from my point of view) is the Me 262; getting an overall shot is impossible (as a tourist) given the lighting and relative height of the machine. Here's the Smithsonian's own overall photo:

And here are a couple of my detail shots:

There are a lot more, at full resolution and you can save any that you like.

Best regards,

Mike

P.S. I've also got pics from the Steven F. I say sort of complete because during construction I managed to lose or break three of the four tiny little aileron counterweights. And moments after I started taking photos of the plane, I snapped off the antenna mast. So I'm debating whether to contact Tamiya for replacement parts and undertake repairs, or just chalk it up to experience and move on.

Sorry, no in-progress pics. I started this kit in March, but didn't realize there was a group build until I was fairly far along. I'll do better next time.

This was my third build after returning to the hobby after some 35
years, and my first Tamiya aircraft kit. I was very much looking forward
to it after seeing so many great reviews of Tamiya kits. For the most
part, it was an enjoyable build, with most of my problems self-inflicted
(see above). The fit was mostly pretty good, with just a little filler
needed on the wing roots. I didn't care much for the engine cowling
being two pieces, though. And even though the top of the cowling
appeared to line up OK with the top of the fuselage, it wasn't until it
was secured in place that I realized the underside engine scoop was
misaligned, with the position of the scoop being dependent on the
locating pin on the cowling. I chose to just live with it rather than
tear everything apart. I also found it hard to get the landing gear
aligned evenly. The legs didn't fit into the holes very precisely so I
was left to eyeball them and hope until the glue set.

I chose to finish the plane as one of the Pearl Harbor birds from the
Akagi, using the kit decals (more about those in a moment). I used
Tamiya IJN gray overall and painted the fuselage and tail bands in MM
insignia red and yellow. I used Polly Scale engine black for the cowling
and landing gear. I mixed Polly light blue with a few drops of dark
green for the cockpit color. I mixed MM clear blue and clear green and
applied it over aluminum for the aotake on wheel wells and landing gear
doors.

I sprayed MM acrylic gloss before decaling. This was also my first
experience with Tamiya decals and was hesitant after reading so many
negative comments about them. Well, add my voice to that list. These
things seemed thick as playing cards and never fully settled in even
with multiple applications of Solvaset. I was just glad there weren't
many decals to apply and that I had painted the red and yellow bands
instead of using the decals. To top it off, after spraying MM acrylic
flat (which I've had no previous trouble with), all of the hinomarus
developed a streaky, whitish residue. After finding online accounts of
similar problems, I sprayed the bird with a couple of light coats of
Testors rattle can Dullcoat lacquer. Thankfully, the residue
disappeared.

I pin-washed the panel lines with thinned raw umber artist oil, using the same
mix for some light streaking. I didn't try for a lot of weathering,
figuring these early-war planes hadn't racked up much hard living yet.

After being away from the hobby for so long, I'm still learning and
catching up with each build, and this one was certainly instructive. My
next project is Tamiya's P-51D, and I'm tremendously impressed with it
after a little test fitting. I'm going to attempt an NMF finish, which
may be too ambitious for my skills at this point, but hey, I'll give it a
shot.

Zvezda Black Swan 1/72

First of all I should state that I am a complete beginner to ship building. I built a Revell Wright Flyer on another forum and my positive experience in rigging it led to my investigating sailing ships. I have read several of the threads here regarding AoS ships and I was wondering if anyone here has any knowledge of this ship. It has 897 parts and is 55cm long.

This scene depicts the Schwere Panzer Abt. 507, Tiger Tank Battalion, in Tarnopol Russia April of 1944.

Original Pictures:

My Diorama: Tiger tank is Tamiya, crew is also Tamiya. Muddy ground level is made up of clay based cat litter ground to a fine powder, mixed with my own special blend of fresh mud pigments. The background building is a different diorama set in place for the final picture.I tried to replicate each detail from the original shot, Paint scheme, crew stance, gun barrel placement, smoke grenade discharger, fuel drum, extra track links, background work, etc.

Over View: I went with a white wash over the Panzer Tan, then I added a worn look from heavy use, spring rain, and general wear and tear.

I had no luck but some users suggested dry-transfer lettering. I can't find anything on the web that's even close to what I need. What "font" is used on lightships in general? Based on the scale of the kit I have, it looks like 3/4" tall (72-point) lettering would be about right. Can anybody please point me to any web resources for lightships in general & lettering used on them specifically? You'd think with all the resources on the web I'd be able to zero in on something, but no luck.

It's been a while since I've posted anything. Been busy on special projects. two of which I have vinally finished.

First up I have an N-scale model of the Imperator MKI from a company in the UK who produces models for Gruntz. The model was slightly modified by me to suite my tastes. The base is completely scratch built by me.

The next one is an N-Scale Dragon Battlemech inspired by the Mechwarrior 4 video game art. Again, minor changes were made to the model itself. The base is completely scratch built. I did screw up on the very edges of the base and hope to go back at some point and fix it. Sorry about the mess. I also want to ponit out that the walls are made of Hydrocal and not foam.

And finally some misc Battletech inspired models. The blue stuff is suppose to be water and not snow. Though the bases could probably go either way.

Zeus:

And Longbow - derived from an old 3" exo-squad toy:

Did anyone go to this show?
I find they are selling bottles of Tamiya Acrylic paint at $10.00 for 12 bottles- so I bought a dozen.

The bottles are the 23ml size and appear still good.

These bottles are HUGE compared to the 10ml size.

Because I left the hobby prior to Tamiya Acrylic paint becoming available locally , and returned only two years ago ,I have only known the 10 ml size.

Question:

What year did Tamiya downsize their paint containers?

I have only been able to locate the following post from 2007:

..............they seem to have done away with the larger 23ml bottles, which
were great value for money, and replaced them with the "mini"
10ml bottles, while still asking the same price (thats what they did
here in Aus anyway).

Lets get into it.

1. Must be an airfix kit. Can be from any time period, any tooling, as long as its branded airfix. (you can even paint up the original airfix combs if you really want, lol)

2. If you have a kit that is branded differently but is deffinatly an airfix tooling, if you can prove this i will accept it.

3. Start Date will be sept 1st 2011. This gives enough time for people to prepare.

4. End date will be Sept 1st 2012. Plenty of time to work through the more complicated kits.

5. When signing up please post Kit name and scale.

6. It can be OOB or as much AM or scratchbuilding as you desire.

Ill have a badge up before the start date.

Off we go people.

Enjoy yourselves.

Thanks to VanceCrozier we have a badge. If anyone has any special size requests feel free to ask him.

Same rules as always, save the badge to your own personal image hosting account before putting it in your signature. A completed entry is required before you may take the badge.
