M992A2 Conversion Complete
Posted by HeavyArty on Monday, August 23, 2010 8:58 AM

I have completed my summer-long conversion of an M109 howitzer into an M992A2 FAASV (Field Artillery Ammunition Support Vehicle).  The build-thread can be seen here.  I have wanted to build an M992A2 for a long time.  I am finally glad to have one in my collection.  I have marked it as a FAASV from 1-41 FA, 3ID during the initial invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Eventually, I will do an M109A6 Paladin from 1-41 FA to go with it.

Here is the final piece.

Easy now Mike.  You might ruptuer something. Cool    Thanks for the compliments.  Eventually I will get to the Paladin to go with it. It is definitely on the to-do list.  It will be a while though.  I have a couple commission works to finish up first.

Jetmodeler:  Thanks.  If you really want to do one, I can send you the CAD and the contact for the company to cut it out for you.  Let me know.

As much as I want to build one, I'm going to have to turn down that offer.Sad I don't really have time to do much modeling right now as I only get about an hour a day to work on my sherman due to homework for school.

Thanks anyways.Smile

Cool conversion.

I like the Mark 19,Grenade Launcher,  you don't see many of those on models, mainly 50 cals. Are you going to put the conveyer belt out the back to the Paladin?

Thanks iraqiwildman.  No, no conveyor belt on this one.  It will be in traveling mode; buttoned up and loaded down with gear...eventually.  Actually, most conveyor belts are removed since they aren't very efficient.  It is easier and quicker to just lug the rounds.  Good PT!

WOW! How seriously freakin' COOL! What a great project and a skillful conversion!

Gino, in all seriousness--get yourself a lawyer, patent your design/conversion, and contact an aftermarket company to produce this--it's that good, and with the tons of guys who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan, you could make yourself some serious extra dough marketing this and selling it--yes, it's THAT GOOD. Bow Down

Honestly--a tremendous job on this, and I hope that you honestly take the idea under consideration and wish you success with it!!! Yes

Thanks Karl.  I'm glad you like it.  It was a fun build.  I don't think I will market this one.  The CAD was done by a friend and the rest is just too much nitnoid stuff to tear apart and cast up now.  Thanks for the compliments though.

Amazing build, and the no-skid is amazing in the detail.  I researched and saw your post on that, looks like I'll be heading to Lowes soon.  I'll search around for no-skid layouts and try to incorporate it in to my Paladin.

Thanks Chief.  It was a fun and rewarding build.  Glad the non-slip trick was helpful.

Is that the terra cotta spray paint method?  I used that on a Stryker MGS a couple years ago and ever since it's been my go-to method for adding non-slip texturing.

Yes, I used Rustoleum Terra Cotta spray for my non-skid coating.  I use it all the time as well.  It looks really good as far as I am concerned.

I did a PowerPoint presentation (got the tab to prove it) on that for my model club a couple years ago.

It's tedious masking off all those bolt heads and grab handles and such; but it looks so good when it's done!
