I was in Michaels today looking for some instant gratification and came across a Revell 1:48 "Huey Hog". The box was small and thin and the parts count was low (77) - and though I know you shouldn't judge a model by its box - I did and put the huey back on the shelf. It also had a 40mm grenade launcher mounted on the nose. So the question is...Did I make a mistake? Is this a good kit? Does it build into a believable Huey without a lot of aftermarket or scratchbuilding or talent?

I have that kit but have not built it yet. Well, it's no Hasegawa kit but with work you can make a nice model. It is fairly inexpensive and maybe you can find a coupon for Michaels and get it dirt cheap. Also, sometime using a cheap kit that has fit issues gives you time to practice using putty & super glue to fill gaps, etc. Then you don't feel like you waisted lots of money if it is not perfect as they are getting so expensive. I'd rather make the mistakes on a $15.00 model than a $40.00 or more model If you do a "Google" seach you will find a few built kits and they look fine. In the Group Build in the Fine Scale forums you will see a Heliocpter Group Build 2009. Someone else has posted to build the same kit. You could build right along with them as they should be posting photos as they go. The GB starts July 1 so it's not too far off. Hope I've been a little help. Pam

Rich, As fara s 1/48 short cabin Hueys go, the Huey Hog kit is the only game in town. The older Monogram and Lindberg kits are virtually worthless as anything but toys. Out of the box, the kit builds into a UH-1B/C hybrid. It has a B tail and sync elevators and a C model rotor. The markings are also wrong as the M-5 40mm and M-16 quad 60 system were Army systems not Marines. Also, no in-country birds ever flew with bothe the M-16 and M-5 systems on the same aircraft. However, the kit does look like a Huey when you are finished and as you say, they are very cheap. You can get the Cobra Company UH-1C update set and do a correct UH-1C fairly easily if you'd like. Or just build her up as she comes and accept that it's not 100% accurate. You might also consider checking the Huey links page pinned at the top of the forum as there are lots of threads dedicated to the different Huey variants and several dedicated to "which model should I build" Good luck and please post pics if you do decide to build one. Ray

In the end it's a fun build and will give you a nice little gunship kit. If you are willing to accept the shortcomings listed above you will have a nice kit on your display shelf in short order. Yes it looks like a Huey. I built mine nearly 20 years ago and have been quite happy with it. I did mine up in Army colors though, with an old Superscale sheet.

Thanks everyone for the responses. I'm amazed at how I get better, quicker and more helpful feedback from this (rotary wing) segment of the forum than anywhere else. I am very grateful !!!

I am the guy mentioned above, in the group build, and I have built this likethree or four times, and it is not a bad kit...definitely worth the fifteen or so bux, minus the 40%off of course! I get the Michael's coupons in my email, and if you would like, I could forward the latest coupon to you... Justin

I believe this is the kit you are talking about. I built it a few months back. Take a look at all the pictures I took. I think it turned out really well, and it still sits on my bookshelf! (Copy and paste the link) http://cs.finescale.com/forums/1105968/ShowPost.aspx
