Proper adhesive for resin parts?
|
|
|
|
Haven't been around in a while - personal and professional reasons - but I've got my modelling desk re-established, and I'm trying something new. Just to get myself interested again, I thought I'd try a simple resin figure. I managed to get all of the parts removed from the casting pieces without damage, sanded the rough parts down, washed all the pieces in a detergent to remove the bonding agent, and started assembly. I used some Testor's CA to try to join two major pieces, and after about 3 minutes holding the parts together, there was still no adhesion - no grip at all. I cleaned it off and tried again with some Zap CA, with the same results. How the heck do you glue this stuff together? What am I doing wrong?

Effective adhesion when using CA depends on two things: - surface area
- close-fitting of parts
If there is little contact area between the parts being glued, it simply won't stick. While it may be possible to achieve a bond in these conditions using a CA accellerator, it will be weak. If there are close-fitting surdaces, the bond will be stronger, and more so if there is a larger surface area in direct contact.

Check out my series on Modeling with Photo Etched parts. You might find it helpful. Different adhesives for different PE applications.

I appreciate your help. I don't htink it's either of these things -I'm joining two large surface areas, and they're both flat, so I've got solid contact. Only other possible problem I can think of - I soaked the parts in a detergent/water mix for about an hour, then rinsed them and put them out to dry for about 2 hours before trying to assemble. Could it be a problem with absorption of detergent, or not being dry enough? How absorptive of liquids is resin?

You might try gap filling CA or better yet 5 minute epoxy. I tried thin CA on resin to plastic parts and got a poor joint. I then used Epoxy and I can't break the joint.

That's about what I was thinking - epoxy should hold quite well. I'll pick some up today while I'm out and about and try that tonight. The joints will all have to be filled and sanded, and I'll want a strong bond so I don't knock it all apart while handling and sanding. Thanks to all!

5 minute clear epoxy is o.k. stuff. my favorites for bonding pita materials is either JB Weld or JB QuickWeld. the first takes a good 3-4 hours to set up and 24 hours to cure. The 2cnd takes 10-15 to setup and a couple of hours to cure.
thark you, stupid warhoons

I recommend pinning the resin parts (metal rod between the two parts) and using any 5 minute epoxy glue for the metal rod and resin parts. Resin is a little heavier than plastic so the metal pins add some extra strength to the bond.
