I'm solidifying the future of model building...

Guys:  Some good news to share!  I'm hosting my sons' next Boy Scout meeting and the activity for the night is MODEL BUILDING!!!

My boys have a pretty good stash...and they are willing to part with a few kits for their Scout- mates so we can have a build night next Friday!

The Scoutmaster will allow me a few bucks to make sure everyone has a nice kit (armor of course)  and the needed supplies.  It should be a blast!...I'll give you a report with pictures soon afterwards.

Sounds like a Cool event, be sure to take some pcitures! I use to be a boy scout, until i saw Highschool Jrotc. My troop (1) use to go camping all the time, but no one even mentioned model building.

Steve I wish my BSA troop had done this kind of stuff instead of pottery and basket weavingAngry [:(!].  You know it's a build like this that the older Tamiya kits would be a perfect choice.

So, I wonder what the merit badge will look like?Wink [;)]

SMJ,

Outstanding!!!

I feel very strongly that this type of activity is much more productive and educational for youth than the god tv or video games.

You should get a badge for your efforts!

More power to ya, SMJ.  I remember when growing up that model building was recreation, not a hobby.  Fun was going to the five and dime (dating myself???) and buying a model to build in an afternoon.  Painting was optional, but if it was done, it was with brushes and Testor's enamel.  What fun, and I hope that you can instill the same feeling to your Boy Scout Troop.

~Steve, sounds like a great thing to do with the troop~~ !   How Cool .            ~I was a boyscout breifly as a boy....'til my troopleader split town !  Call it a California thing I guess  Sigh [sigh] Oddly, The IndianGuides was far more successful in my area. Go figure.     Anyway, I'd go home from either and build models~~wasn't ever done in those clubs..this may be a potent idea!

Hi SMJ.

I must agree with everyone else,  Fantastic Idea!!

1 suggestion- Bring copies of Fine Scale Modeler.  Old or new it doesn't matter, just letting them look threw the pages at what's possible if they Really try I'm sure would inspire your scouts.  It does me every new issue!

Good Luck and keep your stick on the ice,

-Ray

Very cool Steve.  Don't be surprised if this doesn't help with your "funk" too.

WOW!  What a great idea... I am so glad you shared this with us because my wife happens to be the co-leader of my two boys pack.  I told my wife what you did and she LOVED it.  She will ask the pack if they want to do this... perfect timing since winter is almost here and most of activities will be in indoor for next 4-5 months.

Thanks for sharing...

the model design and building merit badge:

http://www.nepabsacamps.org/Merit%20Badge%20-%20Model%20Design%20&%20Building.gif

i earned it when i was in the BSA. not exactly base on our type of model building, but if the boys seem interested it might be a good segway into something to do over the winter months and they get a badge out of the deal. my leaders were always looking into ways they could combine activities and get stuff signed off of merit badges.i stayed in and became an adult leader until i left for the army.(by the way boy scouts is great starter training for the military life) i still miss getting dressed up and doing the Order of the Arrow ceremonies. if you don't know what i talk of i can't tell you.

I love it when a plan comes together!

Re: I'm solidifying the future of model building...

panzerguy: Old Tamiya kits would be great but I can't get them by this Friday. If it goes over well I'll see about getting some for another time...

Ibuild148: Thanks for chiming in.  BTW, I saw El Dorado Hills on your avatar...I moved to NY from Placerville!  Are you aware of the model club that meets at the new Hobbytown in Folsom?  They aren't a formal chapter (yet) but they have some pretty darn good modelers in the group.  Shoot me a PM if you're interested and I'll get you some names to contact so you can meet them!

*INDY:  We must be about the same age.  Indian Guides was popular where I grew up too (Chicago Suburbs)  We were the Osage tribe...vinyl fake leather vests, yellow headgear...with feathers of course!  I saw Venture on your avatar...I frequented Ventura a lot...My wife grew up there..are you a native?

scratchmod: You could be right...the troop meeting just might be the unsuspected "FUNK" remedy I need!

Batosi420: FSM issues!...got plenty of those...great ideaThumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup], thanks.

deaf panzer: Good to hear you passed the idea along!  We need to get the next generation going now or model building may become a lost art.

raser 13: I'll ask the Troop Leader about badges...thanks for the link!
