Workin' on the railroad

One of the joys of building 1/700 ships has been the explosion of kit offerings in that scale in recent years, and the subsequent rush in aftermarket PE accessories for things that most ship modelers could only dream about even a few years ago.

And while there are more and more accessories being offered, like buildings, if there are not a lot of buyers they won't be on the market for long. White Ensign Models had a great line of railroad rolling stock for awhile, but when I finally got around to working on a stateside dockyard diorama of an attack transport, they had stopped making them because not enough people bought them. Bummer. To the internet to see what 1940s vintage boxcars, flatcars and switching engines might look like. Then out came the 1/700 scale ruler, pieces of styrene, bits of photoetch and my trusty Waldron sub-miniature punch to make the wheels. The results turned out OK, to my eye at least:

And my daughter has the nerve to call me OCD ... Big Smile [:D]

Hey that looks awesome! I need to get a set of those punches.

Re: Workin' on the railroad

Be forewarned, although both are hideously expensivive, the Waldron miniature and sub-miniature punch and die sets have been invaluable for me, as I work primarily in 1/700 ships and 1/72 aircraft. I am constantly amazed by the variety of things I can create out of different sizes and thicknesses of plastic stock.

The only down side is that since Waldron folded they are only available from Roll Models.
