Re: Armor trivia

Chris, this is the transportation method I was trying to find to back up my answer. It comes from www.gateway.alternatehistory.com/essays/SeaLion.html

Plans for Sealion involved using Rhine river barges for transport across the Channel. The problem with these was that they were not designed for use in the ocean, and would swamp if exposed to anything but the very mildest weather (or if a large ship passed close to them at high speed). Even if this were not a problem, there simply were not very many of them. The Germans estimated that they had sufficient craft to ship across an invasion force of at most ten divisions. Ten infantry divisions, because without proper landing craft, heavy weapons such as artillery and tanks could only be transported with extreme difficulty. The "best" scheme the Germans could come up with was shipping across tanks on barges, one to a barge, and having them shoot off the front end of the barge so that they could exit it at the landing zone - a method virtually guaranteed to lead to a high rate of failures of tanks attempting to land.

Evidently they planned on driving the tanks off the barges with the hope that the tank would hit bottom rightside up and be able to drive up on shore.

Re: Armor trivia

The method I read about was the Tauchpanzer (diving or dipping tank) concept. You take a Pz. III or Pz.IV, and seal up all the holes where the eater could get in. Then you fit the exhausts with non-return valves. Next, you cover the bow MG, gun mantlet and commander's cupola with waterproof fabric covers. You fit the turret ring with an inflatable rubber seal:

Finally, you fit a 18 metre long flexible breathing tube (not a Snorkel - these wer still highly classified devices which the Kriegsmarine had only just discovered from the Dutch navy)  to the turret roof.

Next you put your tank aboard a carge ship. and take it to just off the Kent coast, hoping that the Home Fleet don't get you on the way. Next you hoist the tank overside (no trivial matter - Pz. IVs weigh 25 tons) and lower it to the sea bed. Now you start the tank's engines (which the non-return valves on the exhausts will make all the easier) and drive along the seabed at a maximum speed of 3mph and onto the beach. Lee's hope your compass has been correctly swung!

Cheers,

Chris.

Re: Armor trivia

Alright here goes nothing. I'm making this one up as I go...

The Gustav and Dora 80cm railway guns weighed in at a massive 1,350 tonnes a piece.

1) How many Tiger I's could have been made with the steel of both railway guns?

2) How many Panthers?

Bonus- Do you think the amount of Tigers/Panthers that could have been produced would have made a difference in the end of the war?

Erik

Re: Armor trivia

BAsed on the info I have in the encyclopedia of armored fighting vehicles:

1. Tiger 1 at 56,900kg/pcs = 47.5 Tiger 1 Tanks

2. Panther at 45,465 kg/pcs = 59.4 Panther tanks

These additional vehicles would have only prolonged the war and then not by much, if anything at all.

Re: Armor trivia

Very good LeopardMan. I don't think they would have done much either. If the steel was used early in the war it may have been a different story. 108 Panzer IV's could have been made. I imagine they would have been important during Barbarossa.

Its on to you, LeopardMan.

It's an AMX-10P manufactured in France. It was exported to Indonesia and Singapore.

Re: Armor trivia

I guess its a swedish Landswerk L-30 Light Tank which could switch from tracks to wheels in less in 30 seconds. It never passed prototype stage so it was tested by the swedish army under the deisgnation "Strv fm/31"

AMX-13 and M24 hybrid? Looked like a GIAT turret. If not French, I'm guessing Belgium?
