Re: Knights of the Sky II- 1/1/09 to 8/31/09
Frank - I could not find an "Official Scale" but from the figures and other parts I would be safe to say 1/48.. The instructions have a 1958 date printed on them. Guess its about Time this kit gets it Glory by being built. Hope there are none of those collector types out there watchingLaugh [(-D]

Roger that Sean.  I put it down as "1/48-ish".  Exciting to see some bombers showing up here! Approve [^]

I dug through my stash to find a suitable kit for this GB, and decided on the Roden 1/48 Nieuport 28 in Lt. Eddie Rickenbacker's markings. Thumbs Up [tup]

buddy- I think fictitious markings are fine.  Those certainly look the business.  As long as it's not something like, say, F-16 NATO Tiger Meet markings on an Albatros. Shock [:O]

Now what am I gonna do with extra set of Zotz Belgian F-16 decals?Sad [:(]  Thanks.

Re: Knights of the Sky II- 1/1/09 to 8/31/09

I'm going to be using portions from a Roden Fokker D-VII and and Eduard Fokker Dr-1 as the starting points for the Fokker D-VI that I'm going to build.

There weren't many produced (less than 50 if memory serves) so the markings will have to be cobbled together from spares but I've got some great color photos of a restored D-VI.

I've also got good reference drawings of the Dr-1, the D-VI, and the D-VII all in the same scale that show the remaining dimensions of the D-VI wing are virtually identical to the D-VII wing except for the reduction in span.  The fuselage needs a bit more work than just using the Dr-1 fuselage but it's mostly in the area around the attchment of the empenage to the fuselage.

I've got a Dual Combo Fokker D-VII on back order from Eduard, if it arrives I might use pieces from one of those as well.  I've got to remove a couple of bays from the center of the upper wing and I think one from each side of the lower wings of the Fokker D-VII.

The project is 1/48 scale.

I have to finish this Baltimore first but I'll have that done before the first of the year.

Unfortunatley, I don't have the limited edition kit with the fish-scale markings.

If I can manage it, I'll do it by hand, but I need some more refs (and a lot of practice).  Can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks

Hey, count me in. I was in the first one, but never actually had time to commit to it. I actually did build 2 biplanes, but they were from the 1930's. I'm going to apply myself this time, got a whole year right?  I'll decide on a kit.

Don, great to see you in a group build!

Thanks Waikong.  Have you talked to Tom lately?  I've not heard from him since well before Thanksgiving.  Also speaking of biplanes did you see my Albatros in the Aircraft section?  I'd appreciate your comments.

Must have missed your thread about teh Albatros, I'll hop over and take a look.

Frank,

Count me in this one as well (especially since I was the last one to suggest a second round)! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]  I have a kit on the way, so I will give you the specifics when it arrives.  In the mean time, I still have to finish up my Airco DH-2 for the original Knights of the Sky group.

gary- I hope you are able to find a kit you would like to build.  For a list of eligible builds, here's a good list at Wikipedia:

WWI aircraft

HTH!

Ah, but I sure did in spades! Sunday I grabed a Roden Fokker D-VII (with Udet decales), an Eduard Albatross D-III and a D-V. All in 1/48th. Be prepaired for lots and lots of questions on those two winged monsters. I also hope to do all three of them in this time frame (assuming I get past the rigging issues). Also found a Sopwith Camel in my stash (Academy). I'm starting with the Fokker D-VII as it looks easiest.

Gary- Good choice!  Though I have never built it myself, I have heard very good things about that kit.  I added that one to the list, and I can add the others if you so choose as we progress. Thumbs Up [tup]

Joe- That is an incredible model!  I was just paging through that issue.  I was very happy to also find a photo of my Tamiya Spitfire on page 39. Smile [:)]

You will find that the Udet profile it represents is actually an early Fokker Schwerin machine and there are subtle differences from that to the early OAW type they have portrayed on the cover art.  Also beware the lower wing fit.  Its easy to fix but don't narrow the fuselage halves to do it.  Sand down the lower wing ends next to the fuselage.  Even the lower half.  Be cautious fitting the forward cabane struts.  both of them and the inner face of the cowling panels need to be thinned for the best fit.
