Re: Helicopter Group Build 2009

Thanks! That's great!

I've actually already started this one on the dio forum as there's going to be at least 6 figures involved, but I'll repost here IOT finish it out.

I also JUST got my OH-58D in the mail, so YA-HOOOOO!!!!

Also ..... just curious, but have we thought about a Helo GB Badge yet? Just wondering ...

Re: Helicopter Group Build 2009

Hello All,

I'd like to join the helicopter GB with my 1/35 Dragon UH-1D Huey that is really a UH-1H, I guess. I've had the kit since it came out so I really need to work on it plus I may need help from you guys with changes for the Vietnam H Huey. I know about the blades being to large, etc. but don't know what I'll do about an extra door gun mount as I'm too cheap to buy one from Cobra.

Pam

Yes, I am female and also a Vietnam era US Navy vet!

Way to go Pam, and thank you for your service. We get a little crusty around here, but it's all in fun. Our fine pilot Mr. Eaton has not yet announced the entertainment, but it's usually pretty good. Welcome aboard.

Re: Helicopter Group Build 2009

Does anyone have any ideas as to where I can go for some aftermarket Huey Hog?  I tried looking, but it seems that noone has anything...which I find hard to believe...

I am not necessarily going for100% historical accuracy, I really just want to make the revell kit a bit nicer...

If anyone also knows of  a place that I canget some figures to go along with the chooper, it would be greatly appreciated.

Justin

Re: Helicopter Group Build 2009

Welcome aboard, Pam, I'll get you posted to a billet and on the roster.  Justin, if you go to Squadron Mail Order and do a search on UH-1  and 1/48 scale you will find resin sets for the UH-1D by Czechmaster and PE for the D by Eduard.  A lot will work for the B which I think is what is called the Hog.

Cobra Company has resin improvements for the UH-1N, UH-1C, and several; AH-1 variants in 1/35 and 1/48.  I have used Cobra Company parts and highly recommend them.  I would go there first.

But frankly, with all the slang expressions used for hueys and their configurations, I get real confused real fast.  When I was in the Army Guard in a helicopter unit I was around Hueys and worked on them and rode around in them in addition to a main diet of CH-37's, but that was the beginning of the Huey epoch.  After 30 years of new types from Bell, endless in-service modifications to new major types like from D to H, I think you just have to decide to pick a picture and build what you see.  Feelings are so specific and strong within the Huey community, especially those who lived in and by them in Viet Nam, that no matter what you do you will come acropper somewhere with someone, but as long as we build Huey models we will still be honoring all of the people who know them well.

As I understand it the Revell model had both B and C attributes.  I am not a Huey expert at all though.

For references, I am told that the Squadron Walkaround on Huey Gunships is very good, here is one of many sources:

http://www.shopwiki.com/_Uh-1+Huey+Gunship+Walk+Around

For a general look at all Viet Nam era gunships Gunslingers in Action by Lou Drendel may be useful, but is not too comprehensive.

Pam,

If you slip over to the helo forum, they've got a stickie on Vietnam era Hueys.  It's a the top of the list.

Admiral,

I'd like to join this build, don't know what it'll be just yet (probably a Hind, maybe a Cobra I've been carting around for 20 some odd years).  I see you let that scurvy dog Bondo in so I guess you'll take just about anybody.

I vomit out my crew door down onto your rotor, sir!Yuck [yuck]

And so it begins. My father made me promise (aeronautical engineer as he is) to never ever ride in one of these infernal machines, which have absolutely nothing to do with science.

It's like an elevator without a building. It's like an updraft without a parachute. It's like a train without rails. It's like positive pressure in an outhouse. Oh, never mind.

Captain Eaton, as my friend Keith who was a pilot in Hueys in VN always said, when you hear the pop, duck and get to know the collective like your mother. I may quit this mess yet, unless someone can explain to me how to run around my front yard with the finished model and make RRRRR noises. I'll probably trip and go endover into the pond. Oh, but the helo will flutter to earth. Not likely, AAARRRGGGHHHPirate [oX)]

Ouch. Actually, no, I met her in China on a hotel balcony and repaired her camera in an hour, flat, using the basics in my shoulder bag.

Cool.  It worked and continues to do so as far as I can tell.  You are a lucky man.

Hey, yeah! I like it .... there's no Killer Egg (hater) but yea, I like it!

BTW, I'm going to need A LOT of help with questions during these builds. As stated on the helo forum earlier, us ground pounders know JACK about little flying thingys with spinner ... thingys. We just get rides and then hop out when the ground get close .... :)

Re: Helicopter Group Build 2009

Now, I am really upset at the inexperience being shown here!!.  Avast ye all, lest ye be run down the tail boom of the venerable H-19 with the tail shaft cover not in place!!

There is only ONE proper way to motivate a model rotorcraft around the front yard.  You must put your right thumb in your belly button, whilst holding said rotorcraft in the remaining digits of that hand, and looking down blow on both the main and tail rotors, else both main rotors in that type (for autogyros an electric power source or rubber band motor may energize the prop) so that the effect is convincing to onlookers.  While these things are being done, it is merely necessary to rub your hair (or pate, as the case may be) with your left hand and utter "Froom  Froom Froom" as you pivot around while running around in the limits of your yard.  There will be no spitting or drooling as that may mar the finish of your model.  If dizziness is imparted eventually, or other effect of being out of breath if you are not an accomplished operatic Bass, or Tuba player in a Polka or Mariachi band, you will eventually safely autorotate yourself to earth, transferring the model from your right to left hand as you descend withouth losing simultaneous contact with either belly button or head (pate).  Those of the left handed persuasionmay reverse the hand sequence, those who are ambidexterous may make the choice, but must state the choice in writing beforehand.

Quite simple, really, much easier than keeping the throttle correlated on any Bell or Hiller of the early days.  Those newbies who came along and have operated only turbine powered helicopters with the little hat switch to set the governor may have a bit more practice to do.  And then of course, those hydraulic fluid drenched persons like me who primarily worked on the wretched things and went through the contortions necessary to do that and flew them less frequently until later years will have no trouble whatsoever.

So there, Bondoman, you have it.  There will be no easy out.  As to you being a lucky guy, surely it be so.  But is SHE a lucky girl?  Maybe in time, if your deportment improves in the latter  days.

Avus, thank you very much for the fine badge.  Make It So!!

Ludwig, I'll update the first post with your build.

Lewbud, you are on the roster.  Happy camping, and yes standards for entry are a bit loose, just like discipline in the typical helicopter unit.  Those officers really know better than to mess with the guys who tighten the "savior" nut.
