Hey Raptordriver....The B-24 I posted pictures of was done 1 panel at a time.  This was done to show different panels of the aluminum.  By rotating the BMF grain during the application, it gives the appearance of real life panels.  I also burnished some panels and polished others as I went.  Pictures really don't do her justice.

Cheers Hey Raptordriver  Lancaire has one of the reasons I did one panel at a time,actually was a nice side effect I discovered. I had HUGE trouble foiling around compound curves, wrinkles, air bubbles and such, on the P-47 almost drove me to drinking. Foil will streach a bit but ya cant shrink it. Doing it one panel at a time solved that, especially on a P-51 with all its compound curves, it was a breeze compaired to the 47. To be honest the only problem I had on the P-51 was at the wingroot I ended up using a narrow piece about 1/4 inch wide to make that work. Also as Lancaire said turning the grain differant directions really made it look real. Wish I could take better pictures to show it. Oh one more thing I found if I started the foil at the smallest part on a curve and worked it to the larger part it came out with little trouble. Hey Lancaire I didnt feel you steppin on me not to worry.

I have to ask, the second picture of your P-51 how did you darken the panel around the exhaust stacks. I used the dull side of the foil on mine then dullcoat over future and dark grey pastels. I ask cause I like yours. I want to do another 51 but a BMF used looking version. I like your P-51D.

The steelwool does dull the foil a bit but not much. I use it mostly to give the foil kind of a patina that hides the corse grain of the aluminum foil. Thing is you have to clear coat it right after you use the steelwool because where ever you touch it you will end up with black fingerprints on the model. I use latex gloves to handle the model even while I am burnishing it.

Hey Randy,

     I used a different type of BMF around the exhaust stacks.  I used Chrome on the entire aircraft and ultra bright chrome around the exhaust.  Like I said, I should have never hit the model with dull coat.  I wish I could bring it back to life..

i might join this group build but not sure what to build but i need to clear up something.  does it have to be foil? since i never experience using or never hear of using the foil.  how does it work?  put foil on the model and glue it under it?   let me know thanks.

Hi Silentmodeler

No you dont have to use foil, you can use paints like Alclad or simular, and there is powder like SNJ that can be used. I hear Krylon makes a paint that works well you can get that at the local hardware store. I use foil with Microscale Micro Metal Adhesive a preassure sensitive glue. If you like ask questions any of the builders in this group are more than happy to help out. So jump on in and build a NMF can be any aircraft you like. Here is a how to link for the foil method that should answer some questions its the one I read to get me started.
