Re: No More Excuses GB

Hmmmm...Roy hasn't answered my question, but it appears that the end date for this GB is August 1 and there is open enrollment for its length so I'll assume that I can enter another unfinished build! Question [?]  I'll start posting, but if anyone objects to this I will cease posting and retract the entry.

This is the Trumpeter 1/35 KV-1 (1941) "Small Turret" that I built in Oct 2006, OOB except for a metal gun barrel from....??.  Just when completion was nearing little things started breaking, caused by my less than nimble fingers, and total completion was not achieved.  In disgust I sent it to the display shelf with the intention of someday completing it.  Needless to say it sat untouched and forgotten until last weekend when I started to weather a JS-2 tank for another GB.  I then remembered this tank and that it was a similar color so I grabbed it off the shelf to see how it looked.  After checking it out I thought about it a bit and realized that I could use it as a weathering test bed before trying out some new techniques on the JS-2!!  AND I figured this was the perfect time to complete the repairs along with the weathering and in the process could enter it into this GB!  Woo Hoo!!

I'm not worried about the end date as I can do all the fixes tomorrow and then just play around with the weathering for a couple of days.

Anyway, if anyone objects please let me know!  I'm going to start working on the completion now!

Decals are applied and air recognition strip painted on. Now I just need to weather it.

And my M12 GMC is now ready for weathering...

Re: No More Excuses GB

Wow that KV looks NICE Ernest.

Stikpusher, can't wait to see those weathered. I like the "look" of the M12 GMC better as it stands right now. I guess because the flash makes the T34 look to bright...looks like either the tracks arent painted, or the rubber on the road wheels and the middle of the tracks arent painted. Maybe it's just the flash playing tricks with my eyes.

My update is that I didn't like the color on my F-14, so I'm masking everything to paint it a lighter gray. Otherwise it would've looked alright in the pictures but I would see the white overspray and the leakage onto the gray and I'm just not going to settle for that. I'll post some pics later tonight when I'm done...definately not going to finish the M113 Fitter before the deadline, but I think I might be able to pull the F-14 right before it.

Re: No More Excuses GB

Thanks Josiah!  BTW, those are all steel wheels on Stikpusher's T-34, not rubber on them. Looks like he painted the contact surfaces a metallic color which would be appropriate.  Same with the tracks, the surfaces that contact the wheels are shinier than the rest of the track due to the metal to metal contact.

That being said I do like the way these are turning out Stikpusher.  I agree with Josiah though regarding the bright look of the T-34.  Are you planning on some special weathering on this guy?

OK, so I managed to fix, replace or remake the booboos on my KV-1.

Cut off the molded on tow hooks an drilled new holes.

Fixed the tow hooks with .020 brass wire.

Voila!

I don't know what this cable & hook assembly is for.  Maybe the engine hatch is too heavy to lift by hand?  Anway I cut off the molded, oversize cable & ring and replaced with wire.

The front DT mg was an easy fix...just a little liquid cement and it was back in shape.  The turret rear mg was a different story.  It disappeared, so I made a new one from SS tube, brass wire and aluminum sheet.

Actually, before I did all this I drybrushed the entire model with a light olive-green oil paint.  This helped to lighten the paint job a little before the upcoming oil washes. The oil paint allows the drybrushing to be much more subtle.  Its disadvantage is that it takes 1-2 days to dry.  Sorry I didn't take photos of the model.

Re: No More Excuses GB

Hey Ernest those small details really push your KV to the next level, I can't wait to see the weathering you give this beast. Also, that makes sense about the steel wheels...didn't think about that, I've been losing my mind lately due to lack of sleep, got about three hours last night then got up and ran, then went into physical therapy with flip flops on!

Surprisingly (I'm always behind schedule) I havent gotten photos of the F-14 masked for the new coat of gray...I finally got it done in the wee hours of the morning today, but was too tired to take pics...I think I might airbrush the gray on today, but it depends on if I go out and try to shoot a groundhog thats at my friends farm.

Well I got it painted, looks a lot better IMO. Still looks kinda dark to me...dunno whats up with that, but my dad said it looks considerably lighter and doesnt clash with the white anymore. Oh well...enjoy.

Re: No More Excuses GB

Josiah, I am gonna do some serious weathering on the T-34. I have acouple new techniques and one new medium (for me) that I am gonna try out on it. The M12 will be less heavily weathered and in my more traditional style.

Bufflehead called the roadwheels and tracks correctly. The roadwheels have no rubber rims on this variant and the shiny steel is on the metal to metal contact areas.

I look forward to it, I'm going to take notes as well. Hans got me tamiya's T-34/76 for the secret santa build and I need to build it sometime...I've never been good at weathering so this'll be good.

Re: No More Excuses GB

Hello everyone.  I apologize for the long absence, family matters, home remodeling, summer vacation and other things too numerous to list.

I have not read all the new post since my last login which has been a few months but I did notice the end date is 1 Aug.  If anyone wants I can always extend the date.  After all it does say "subject to change".

At the present I'm unable to do any modeling myself but when the remodeling work is completed I will have a dedicated work area.  We are doing the work ourselves so it takes time.

I will try and check in daily to see how many of you want to extend the end date.  I myself would like to get more of my shelf queens completed.  Let me know what you guys want.

Extending the date would definately help me out, I doubt I can get the F-14 done by saturday.

Re: No More Excuses GB
I'm definitely in favor of extending this GB!!  The KV-1 is almost complete but I'm leaving for Las Vegas tomorrow and tonight is the last night I can work on it.  It will be done shortly after I return.  In addition I would really like to finish the Pz. IV shelf queen.  If the GB is extended I would like to enter that as my third build.

I was thinking of a end of year end date (subject to change).  I will try and read the old post and update the roster as time permits me.

Re: No More Excuses GB

Hi all,

End of year was going to be my suggestion -- wow, August has come round fast! I just finished a month of jury service, which may or may not be over as of Monday... I'm still struggling with the last two builds, I've not touched my NMF entry and the Seaplanes GB has been on the back burner for a loooong time. So an extension would be terrific, and I can even pretend I might get to another shelf-sitter or two!

Cheers,

Mike

I like it!  Thanks Roy!

Josiah, I'm no expert but the paint change on your F-14 to the lighter color definitely looks like an improvement! Thumbs Up [tup] Can't wait to see the markings on it!

Re: No More Excuses GB

Well, I just got the go-ahead from Roy to join the build and I'm very grateful for the extention. I had orginally shot him an email about a month ago, but I know that he's been busy.

I'm going to be taking care of an old M1 Abrams that I built a few years ago, but it was more or less a throw together ....

I don't remember the manufactuerer, but it's a 1/35. I think its from Academy, but I don't know. I'm looking for AM PE kits to add some detail. I'll scratch some as well. I'm also looking into using seperate link tracks, as I've never done it before (and I think its a right-of-passage kinda thing ... as well.) I'm also considering the new urban survival resin kit, but I'm not sure that I want to go that far. Not sure of the era or environment in which I want to place it yet, but I'll figure it out.

Hope to start on it soon, I'll post a picture of the tank "as-is" and post it later.

Thanks again, Roy, for lettin' me in ....

Re: No More Excuses GB

Almost there... So far, (in order) Pro Modeler dark mud wash, a wash of Testors MM acrylic Raw Umber, dry brushing with Gunze Red Steel (thinned) Testors MM acrylic Armored Steel, and Testors MM acrylic RAF interrior green. Not quite toned down enough yet. I am planning on a airbrushed coat of Polly Scale Dust, then a liberal application of a mud mix of my own concoction...
