I really cant understand the guys that have to model every variant.  They must have people who come into the house and say "Um, why have you built 20 of the same plane ?"

Actually, I was surprised to see than Manny didnt mention the 109.  Whats gives Manny ?

I am ashamed to admit it, but I rarely open up a post these days if it's another 109.

Theres just nothing that stirs the blood about them anymore.  I always thought the Ju87 was a far more intimidating/sinister looking plane.

I love 109's but they are waaaay overmodeled. The F-16 is also insane.

I have 5 from the WWII era 109 ,190, Mustang, Thunderbolt, Corsair.  But I would have 50 of each if I had the chance.

I don't think that figure modeling is within the scope of this thread, but yeah, sometimes Captain Piccard could fall into the category of over-modeled..

Re: Most Over-Modeled Combat Aircraft by Era

I have to say, I can understand multiple builds of 109s & 190s as at least there are a huge range of options camo wise for Luftwaffe aircraft, particularly if you look at the late war time frame.

With aircraft like the Spitfire & the Mustang the camo options are more limited, but at least with the 'stang there is a wide range of nose art to differentiate your builds.

Well the Spitfire does have something like 16 versions at least.

Well the Spitfire does have something like 16 versions at least.

Unfortunately most of those versions will wear 1 of only 3 colour schemes! This is why I don't build many Allied aircraft.

Totally agree.  I recently researched the Hurricane with a desire to have 3-4 models showing a BoB land scheme, Desert, Sea Hurricane and post '42 temperate sea scheme only to find I could easily model over 14 different camo/NMF schemes with significantly different colors and markings.  In the process I found some similar Spitfire/Seafire opportunities and both have expanded tremendously my desire to build something typically over-modeled, but different.

I also recently discovered JG-54 regularly experimented from 1940-1944 with camo schemes that were not well documented and did not conform with Luftwaffe directives.  So many of these are unique that I find myself interested in the Me-109 where before it was something I would ignore as overdone.

Re: Most Over-Modeled Combat Aircraft by Era
This reminds me of when Tamiya started a new line of 1/48 WWII a/c. They started with three models and two of them were Spitfires. Come on guys! I thought that was a little much! The third was a P-51, no surprises there.

As for the between the wars period, I've seen many more F4B4's and P-6E's than P-26's. When I wanted to do a P-26 some time ago, I couldn't find one. I would say that this period is under modeled in general. This is my favorite period in aviation history and the experiments and progress was fascinating as well as the racers.

Bombers in WWII I'd have to agree with those who say the B-17 but how can you have too many models of such an unassailably cool plane. I want to build the B-17 that appeared at the end of the movie "Thunderball" with the big cable catching gantry on the nose. I would put the B-25 in solid second on that list.

The great thing I liked about Hasegawa is that their WWII offers were heavily Japanese (obviously) and I loved their Mavis and Emily kits. No fear of over-representation there.

As for me, I build what I like and I have no problem if everyone else has one too, it just gives us something to talk about.

Deus in minutiae est.
