Guney, Dave, Rick, thanks for the comments! panzerguy wrote: | | I'm curious about something, all the ammo bins that have rounds molded in them always have the rims sitting flush to the bins top. Steve, no need to worry about adequacy! As to your question about the ammo rounds, that's a good question and one that I can't really answer. All of the photos I've seen of ammo bins have been of empty racks vs. "loaded" racks. I would think that the gravity type vertical boxes like the one you see here on the /9 would probably have to have a little clearance at the top to allow the round to be pulled out easily. In scale though it probably wouldn't be noticeable and so the "flush" look is often what you end up with.

With this post, I concede that you may, repeat MAY make it to 100 before I do. Nice detail work, sharp painting and construction. It's a pleasure to watch you work, Bill. Looking forward to some more paint. Bill

Hi, Bill great progress so far, looks great with a splash of paint. I started my AFV club UHU 251/20 at the weekend and while I have several Dragon 251's it is very interesting following along here to see how differently the two companies have tackled their chassis's. I must actually take two kits out and compare. I don't think accuracy will be a question from these two premier manufacturers but merely a question of the approach to tooling. I know the Tamiya kit is fairly old at this stage, (I remember buying the Verlinden upgrade set and nothing fitted properly) but the assembly seemed a lot simpler. I would love to compare the Tamiya to today's offerings. At the time people awaited the arrival of the kit in the shops because it was a time when new releases were few and far between. I think I had the kit 251/9 built and painted in about two weeks. Just having fond memories......Ha...Ha... Keep up the good work. Terry.

Bill, she's coming along quite nicely. Your builds are always enjoyable to watch. Kinda of like being invited to quietly watch over the artist's shoulder as he works. I can feel the crescendo slowly starting to build. I'm looking forward to your interior getting that lived in look. doc

Jim, thanks for the comments! I'm planning a three tone scheme for this one. Camo schemes (as well as using things like foliage) were quite common with these vehicles going by the reference photos. Doc, I'm humbled by your kind words and am glad you enjoy following along.

Some sharp work as always, Bill--I like this variant with the "big shoulders" compared to the Tamiya kit. Very cool, and very clean as always!

While watching TV in the evenings I managed to get the tracks built. I opted for the "early" style that are the non-Magic type tracks with the three lightening holes on either side of the guide horn. This meant that they of course had to be removed from the sprues and the 3 attachment points cleaned up per link as well as the 2 points per track pad block. In terms of effort it was the same as if I'd used the Magic variety really since those had two ejector marks on each link that needed to be sanded or scraped off so definitely a case of pick your poison! I assembled the links so that they would remain fully workable. My assembly method is straight forward, I use the pins to link a pair together then carefully glue the cap block on top so that it traps the pins but still allows them to move freely. Since I haven't added the road wheels yet, I only assembled 52 links per side and will add the more if needed depending. Once the pairs were together then it was a case of just "daisy chain" assembly from there. The pairs were added to make 4s, then the 4s added to make 8s, etc. The 8s were then all assembled together and, voila!, two fully workable track runs ready to be test fit once the wheels are on.

So Mike, I'm curious to know how you know so much about knitting? Got another hobby that we don't know about, eh? |

This was probably a good call Bill. I used the Dragon EZ-links on my 251 and they were tough. The challenge is not the alignment but getting the darn cleats on! Molding the assembly to the sprocket and wheels was a pain in the A**! I noticed the EZ's had an ejector mark too... I didn't sweat that this time though because I had planned for heavy dirt and dust. Anyway, it looks like you're really on a roll ! BTW: I missed a week or so of the forum while on vacation...have you discussed your paint scheme for this one yet? Maybe I'll get to your web-link and read further, I was just wondering...
