Re: Knights of the Sky II- 1/1/09 to 8/31/09

Stephen,

Fantastic work as usual! Bow [bow] Those decals do look very convincing for the streaking.  I still think that the base color on the fuselage looks more blue-gray than linen though (not that it looks bad by any means).

One quick question, have you dealt with Smer kits in the past.  I happened to come across a small collection of Smer kits in 1/48 and 1/44 scale in a hobby shop in Virginia last week while visiting.  I was really tempted by the markings for a Dr.1, but I backed off and went for the Pegasus Martian War Machines diorama kit instead.

Scott the Smer kits are very crude by todays standards. They also are not 1/48 scale as the box claims. These kits are repops of an old company called Artiplast who sold them as 1/50 scale. I guess Smer figured it had a better chance to sell them if they lied about the scale. They have very basic detail. Interiors consist of a flat floor seat and a stick. Plus they will never look right sitting next to yor other 1/48 scale planes due to the off scale.

Hello all,

Just want to congratulate everyone on their superb efforts. The wealth of talent on here is mind boggling. Looking forward to seeing all our birds lined up at the end of the GB.

 Guy,

The LVG is a beauty and no mistake. A few dry fit pics for you to get the juices flowing.

Cheers,

Von Buckle Smile [:)]

Exhaustive work Big Smile [:D]

Re: Knights of the Sky II- 1/1/09 to 8/31/09

soulcrusher.

Thanks for the information on Smer kits, and now I am glad that I passed them over.  One of the kits actually did have 1/50 scale on it, but the others were labeled as 1/48.

Stephen,

Great work once again! Bow [bow] I can not imagine building kits at the rate that you continue to knock them out.

Frank,

I ran into some paint issues with the Pfalz over the weekend as removing my masking (Parafilm M) for the belly band tore pieces of paint off of the fuselage.  I have repaired most of the areas, and still hope to wrap this one up later this week.

Bob,

That is one BIG plane!  I can not wait to see what it looks like finished.

Bob- That thing is truly a MONSTER!!!  What are your impressions of the kit thus far?

Scott- Bummer about the paint issues, but no worries- you still have plenty o' time yet.

Which reminds me...

Just over a month to go everyone!  How is everyone out there doing who is still working on their builds?

Frank,

The engineering that has gone into the LVG is simply stunning. Large scale WW1 manufacturers  must be quaking in their boots. Highly recommended.

Cheers,

Bob

Stephen Your DR's are fantastic. The streaky camo is deffo one id like to try. Id even give the streaky decals a go. You are deffo the meastro, Bow [bow]

Bob, i agree with everything you say, that kit is a stunner but it definately needs some PE for the gun barrels. Any ideas?

Re: Knights of the Sky II- 1/1/09 to 8/31/09

Frank I am nearing completion of my Fokker. I just have to add the machine guns the instrument face that is mounted in the cowl and then add the two rigging wires for the tail and the two for the landing gear. I am saving posting pics unti she is 100% done. Only one minor setback. I lost the ejector chutes for the machine guns. Two tiny pieces of curved plastic. I could grab them out of the box because I purcased the dual combo kit and then worry about finding replacements for that kit later or just leave them off. Still undecided on that issue.

SC-

Are those parts you need part no. C7?

I built DML's Fokker D.VIII last year, and I believe it shares some parts with that company's D.VII.  I have some left over pieces resembling a feed chute (2 of them) and also another pair of curved parts resembling Eduard part no. C7.  If you like, I would be happy to send them all to you and you can see if you can make them work. Thumbs Up [tup]

Hi all, I dont know if this site has been posted before. If it has i appologise. I found the site while browsing and this co is just amazing. They are reproducing WW1 planes!! Exactly as they were made in WW1. They are using original engines that have been found hidden away in dark barns or garages and reconned them and got them back in the air. They have even reverse engineered the rare Oberussell? (DR.1 engine) and produced an original engine, 90 yrs after the last was built. Anyhoo, have a look. But make sure you have plenty of time to spare. Heres a pic from the site that i loved,

Re: Knights of the Sky II- 1/1/09 to 8/31/09

Frank that is the exact piece I need. Part C7 and C2. I have no Idea how I lost them. I do not even remember removing them from the sprue. If you do'nt mind sending them my way I would really appreciate it. I will borrow the ones from the second kit for now and put the other ones back in the box so the second kit is still complete. Mabye for a Knights of the Sky GB part III? You still have address? If not drop me a PM. I really appreciate it

Guy that is a cool pic. I had no idea they built those props like that. I always assumed they were carved out of a single piece of wood not laminated out of multiple pieces like that. There is a place about three hours from me in Rhinebeck New York where they have a small collection of old biplanes and almost all of them are in flying condition believe it or not. They even have some replicas of some pre WWI stuff.

Well I can't believe I finished it. I think this is the most time I have spent on a single engine plane ever. I do'nt think I'll win any awards but I did learn alot and I know when I build the second kit in the box it will definelty go alot faster and turn out better. So hear she is.

SC- Man, welcome to the finish line!!!  That really does look spectacular, and I mean that!  The decal work, and especially the streaking look resplendid.  You should be rightly proud of that build, especially with the fits she gave you.  Well done my friend! Approve [^]
