Re: #5 Trumpeter's German 38(H) Artillery Observation Vehicle WIP
I personally liked the earlier paint version  as i like the hard edge you created but thats just my personal view and it wouldnt do if we all liked the same things in life would it. When i said i hand paint my hard scemes i mean i brush paint it with diluted paint and build it up with several coats as to not leave brush marks and this i do with acryliks. But i will have a go at  the way you did the first version  as soon as i build something needing hard edge again.

To be honest with you Andy I lliked the hard edge better as well and I learned a valuable lesson though the process.  I learned what I prefer on a cheaper model and I proved to myself I could free hand AB.  The Paint job looks better in person actually but I do agree with you and I will stick with my instincts going forward.

No offense intended it's all a process.

Q for you Sir.  Am I in the ballpark for close detail work with A Badger 100LG with a medium tip running at 10 PSI for free hand cammo?  I normally spray at 18-20 PSI.

I'll be honest with you here Edmund and say "I have no idea!". Laugh [(-D] Every airbrush, paint combination, compressor, etc. is different. I'm not an expert on various airbrushes and their qualities so I'm afraid I'm little help on this point. Playing around with airbrush settings and PSI is important in terms of matching up what your particular aibrush setup can handle. Typically higher pressures can produce more overspray depending on your paint thinning and trigger actions, but again there's no "magic" formulation that is a one-size-fits-all. Wink [;)] What I can tell you is what I use for my paintwork...I use an Aztek A470 double-action and for fine work will use the gray tip and get in very close to the surface. I typically will run my little 1/2 hp airbrush compressor (no tank) in ranges varying from 10-25 PSI as it a) can't go any higher than 25 and b) anything under 10 isn't sufficient to draw paint through the airbrush. HTH for what it's worth!

That looks very good,. Edmund.  There is a tendancy to magnify your "mistakes" in your own eyes because you know where they are.  Honestly, I have looked over your pictures, that looks very good.

Congrats on your first successful free hand!

Hi, Edmund, everything looking good so far. I must admit that I started at page one and found this a great "page turner" a really enjoyable build to follow.

Hey Bill Thanks for the overview on the Air Brush settings.  I appreciate your comments as alsways. I got some great tips today at the Model show on how to set up and practice continuous close up work.

Thanks Drywall Monkey!  Isn't that the truth though. I am much more critical on myself than I would ever dream of being with another human being.  I feel that I still have more practice to do with the AB until I feel comfortable with my output so I decided to basecoat the whole vehicle and go back to my original hard edge camo scheme which I did tonight.

Check this out!

Since I had a "do over" I took the opportunity to lighten my base coat color with MM Armor Sand lightened with MM Primer Grey which will allow me to go to town on the weathering.

Thanks again Bill for your support and "faith" in my abilties because some days that's all I got!

I am going to blow a coat of Future on before bed and then see if i can finsh details and start weathering tomorrow.  Happy Fathers Day tomorrow to you and everyone else here that is graced with that privliedge!!

Thanks Mate!  My inspiration came forn the Bronco kit box art. I had some concerns about all the layers but I had a remediation plan all ready to be executed.  If the re-paint would of went south I would of ordered the Bronco version of this kit and used the tracks form the Trumpeter on that one and started over.

My wife is happier as well.  She liked the hard edge much better as well she called my free hand attempt the watercolor paint job!  Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

I found the perfect Tank figure for it at one of the Vendors at the Peninsula Modeling show yesterday and a great round base.

I mihgt change his head with the Ultracast head to the far right in this picture.

Hereis my $2.00 base!

Gotta agree Edmund, the second hard edge scheme looks better. Looking forward to the weathering, figs and the basework. two bucks for a base, good deal.

Some nice looking figure kits to go along with what is already becoming a great looking #5

Are you still thinking of the foliage on top of this? I think that'd fit in great with the recon/observation type role of this tank.

Cool!  Thanks Chris and Bill as well.  Yes I am still leaning towards my first organic cammo.

Build Update:

38H Assembly Time: 12 Hours

Painting and Weathering Time: 12 Hours

Aggregate Build Time: 24Hours

I am not going to count my re-paint on build clock.  I was able to get two light coats of Future applied last night and got some decals on the little guy tonight.

I wnated to tone and blend in teh cammo patten so I used two different Mig Filters:

Tomorrow I will assemble paint, weather and mount the muffler and then start all the Pioneer Tools.  I want those components to age with the vehicle as I move through the remainng weathering steps.

Happy Fathers Day to everyone!

Re: #5 Trumpeter's German 38(H) Artillery Observation Vehicle WIP

Build Update:

38H Assembly Time: 12 Hours

Painting and Weathering Time: 18 Hours

Aggregate Build Time: 30 Hours

Work and Family got most of my attention this week but I did manaage to squeeze in the muffler assembly and texturing by Mr. Surfacer 1000, followed by MM Gunmetal  Non-Buffing metalizer, some dry brushing with MM  Steel Non-Buffing Metalizer, and finally a couple of Burnt Umber Dry brushes as well.  If that sounds familier it is pretty much sport on what Mr. Plunk does and I had never followed that particular recipe on Mufflers so I gave it a dry.  I also added a very light dry washes of standard and light rust Mig Pigments to finish it off.

I then did some research on MG34 pictures on the web and then painted up two MG34's just in case I wasn't happy with the outcome.  I used a mix of Model Color Burnt Umber and Model Color Red for the stock of the weapon and I like how it turned out. I think I used too much silver on the steel dry brushing so I will have to be more careful in the future.

I then detailed and weathered the Pioneer tools and spare tracks and mounted them.

I took some pics with the MG34 just sat into the gun shield due tothe fact that the figure I am going to try to mount has the MG34 molded into his hand so I painted up the other two MG34's as a backup if my figure does not fit correctly.  I wanted you guys to see the vehicle with the gun it looks cool!

I am now ready to start weathering in earnest.  I plna to do some pin washes, rain marks, oil fading, chipping the works.
