Re: 1,000 Roadwheels - 2009

Thanks guys!Big Smile [:D]

Marc: The schurzen are actually made of nickle? or steel? not sure which, but it's definately metal. They are included in the kit, and they are also included in the earlier boxing which will be winging it's way to you this weekend.Wink [;)] Yeah, the DS tracks are VERY nicely detailed, and they take paint well. The only thing they don't do is replicate 'sag' which I can live without since I have the schurzen.

Boyd: I don't think I'll alter my approach to painting this beast! The schurzen are removable, as are all of the roadwheels and tracks so I think I'll just proceed according to my original plans for painting.

The StuG Iv will have to wait a bit......not only do I have to finish the Brummbar, but I'm also building an SdKfz 234/2 Puma for the Achtraden group build. I do think I have enough time to get the StuG done before the end of this build though.

 Thanks again for looking.

Nate

I should get the Ostwinds upper hull done tonight. Then it's on to the E.

Re: 1,000 Roadwheels - 2009

Just finished getting the paint on. I have used Xtracolour enamels. The kit instructions were no help at all so all i used for referance was the black and white photos, and we all now how easy that is to determine colours. So this is my best guess.

The turret is very different to the hull and according to the referance this was just a mild steel turret just for the prototype and i am guessing it was painted seperatly to the hull.

The next stage will be a dusting of very thinned yellow. To weather i am just going to give it a light dry brushing possable followed by a light dot filtering on the turret and other none zimmed areas. There is no evidence of any chipping or rust in the pics, it looks almost factory fresh. And there are no markings on this vehicle either.

I am away from camp next week so no modelling for me, but hopefully i can get it finished the following week.

Re: 1,000 Roadwheels - 2009

Hi all,

Great work proceeding as always! Nothing to report yet but hoping to get back to the StuG IV in the near future. I'm hoping the Tamiya Brummbar still makes it here before the end of this build, and today I splurged on two sets of Echelon Decals from Lucky Model in Hong Kong, with heaps of markings for the G. H and J models. I'm thinking I might take a crack at that early Tamiya H/J reboxed by Academy, it should just about fall together and I have the Lion Roar PE turret armor set to bring it up to speed as either a J or a skirtless late H. The sheets were listed as 'available,' however, not 'in stock,' so there may be a wait while they scare them up from the distributor. One of the sheets is listed as 'out of print' at Spearheads Frontier (the originating company), so we'll see what turns up in due course.

I've no idea if the Dragon Kugelblitz will make it to Aus before the end of the build, and we're starting on our second heatwave of the season despite being three weeks away from the official start of summer, so we'll see what is or isn't possible as the summer gains momentum.

Cheers, Mike/TB379

Bish-Your Ostwind is looking great. Love the camo, I see you kept the tools off.  Are you going to add them later? I do like the clean look without them.

Well here are some update pics.

Tried to prime them before the rain started, almost made it.

Well back to work. Starting on the E's upper hull next.

Re: 1,000 Roadwheels - 2009

Hey Stephen, those are really starting to come together!Thumbs Up [tup] I especially like the StuG.Smile [:)]

I managed to get some painting done on my Brummbar, though I haven't applied the camo yet. I might be able to finish later on.

I pre-shaded in black as illustrated by the first pic, and then lightly misted on Tamiya Dark Yellow until I was happy with the results. I don't think the subtle shadow effect of the pre-shading came through in the pics, but it's there. As always, comments welcome.Big Smile [:D]

Re: 1,000 Roadwheels - 2009

NucMedTech  Thanks. I usually paint the vehicle without the tools on and paint them seperatly then add them at the end. However, all the pics i have show it without any tools on. I am trying to build it as close to the photos i have, and one pic in particular. The only deliberat exception is the drivers side visors will be closed instead of open and instead of a crew manning the gun for the photo shot i all have people looking round this new vehicle. Once the dio is done i plan on posting the pic i am useing and a pic of the model from as close to the same angel as possible.

Love that StuG. Got a couple of StuG III's but really want to get a IV.

Re: 1,000 Roadwheels - 2009

I have taken a break from this GB for 7 or 8 months, while doing builds for another modeling site.  I'm ready to jump back in the game though with a couple 1/72 builds.  I'm kind of burned out on 1/35 right now.

I just ordered a Stug IV and the Pz.Kpfw IV Ausf F1. (that I have been craving since release)  I plan on knocking those two out during my week off during Thanksgiving.

Who know's, I may get to that Brummbar before December....

Re: 1,000 Roadwheels - 2009

Nachtflieger- Thanks, they are coming along slowly. I expect the E's upper hull to take about 1-2weeks. I'm just not a fast builder. Your brummbar is looking great, btw.

Bish- I'm going to try it both ways to see which I like better. Obviously the stug and ostwind I'll paint with the tools on; but, since the E has seperate tool clamps and tools I'm going to paint those off the model. Like I said I do like the tools off the ostwind, if it wasn't for all the placement holes I might have left a few off of mine. I'm not to sure the bore brush is even needed (at least the type provided in the kit).

Glamdring- I got a late start on this GB too. Looking forward to your contribution.

Thanks for the encouragement guys!Big Smile [:D]

I have a few more progress pics of the paint job. The main camo is done, and the first filter has been applied. Next step will be installing the roadwheels, and adding a wash around the running gear.

Re: 1,000 Roadwheels - 2009
Nate - that looks great! You going to try to get the decals to lay down over the zim? Or is some hand painting in order? Looking at the markings in the mid version, there doesn't seem to be much too them.

Re: 1,000 Roadwheels - 2009

Thanks Marc! I got the roadwheels on, and a wash of burnt umber this morning. I'm thinking I might have this finished over this coming weekend.Smile [:)]

As for the markings, this kit has the same markings for two Stupa in Italy that the Mid Production Brummbar without zim has.  There are two others also, but I'm planning on marking this as a command tank in Italy, so there is only going to be the number one, and the Balkenzreuz on both sides. I believe the decals will be able to conform to the zim with no problems. The zim on this kit seems very restrained in my opinion.
