Geneseo airshow...any one else going??

I've been going since I was a kid, I love this show. Back in 89 they had 5 B-17's, a liberator and a Lancaster, all in one place. They'll 1 B-17 this year and a B-24, but the biggest feature is the P-40's this year. Supposed to be the largest gathering of them since WWII.

Re: Geneseo airshow...any one else going??

I'm planning on going all three days, although it may only be two... depending on how much gas I burn getting there... and the weather.

I've been going to this show since I was a kid as well... 1983 was my first year at Genny. I'd have to say that things haven't changed all that much, despite the passage of 25 years and the fact that a different group is running the show nowadays. It's still my favorite show...

I'm pretty jazzed with the Gathering of Warhawks this year. For those who are fans of the P-40, check out this page from my website for some photos of the two Hawks that were there last year.

I'll be there! Still trying to figure out how to come up with gas money to get there. My dad lives not to far from there. He started taking me and my little brothers when I was kid, then we'd go up there sometimes through out the year just to look around. I'm kinda making it a family tradition, my dad took me when I was a kid, now I take my oldest son, youngest is to little to take walk around that heat all day.

I would love to go, but the cost of the gas from St Louis and back would break my modeling budget for a LONG time.  Post pictures please!!!!!

I'll be there on Friday.  Dragging all the camera gear out and plan on sitting by the flight line most of the day, if it doesn't rain.

I'm gonna be there on Saturday.  This year I'm taking along the family and a few friends.  I'm trying to turnas many people as I can into propeller-heads and this is the show to do it at.

Hope to see some of you guys there!

I try to make it every year - it's really a great show for both WWII and WWI era A/C.  An ideal occasion for taking walkaround pictures - you can walk right up to (and in most cases - under) the A/C.

Unfortunately - I don't think I'll be able to make it this year.

Well, maybe some of us will bump into each other... I probably won't be too far from the P-40s for most of the time, so chances are that you'll find me in that general area.

Wayne, what time are you planning on being there Friday?

Justen, hope to see you on Saturday!

I'll be there saturday, with my dad, brother and son. I'll probably be hanging around the B-17, or the WWII re-enactors. CANT WAIT!!!!! I'll be wearing a operation iraqi freedom hat with a bunch of pins on the bill of the hat if anyone spots me.

Re: Geneseo airshow...any one else going??

MAN!!!

Am I jazzed!!!

I was sitting on my deck, finishing up a late lunch (or early supper) at 3:24PM when I hear a vaguely familiar rumbling noise...

All this morning and afternoon I've been messing around with a new camera, and so was fortunate enough to have it with me...

Without a moment's hesitation, I grabbed the rig, popped off the lens cap, switched on, and swung the lens skyward...

And here's what I saw, right over my own backyard...

Unfortunately I had the camera in point and shoot mode, and the props are frozen, but I dunna care... two P-40s just flew over my house! Wheeeeeeeeee!!!

Okay, I'll calm down now...

I dunno which SNJ that was, but the Hawks were Kittyhawk I AK899 (Old Exterminator) and P-40M 43-5795 (The Jacky C. II).

Sometimes it pays to sit on your rear all day with a camera in your hand...

Steve

Hope to be there about 10:00/30ish.  I am bringing a friend and a couple of his sons.  I'll keep an eye out for ya.  You know where I'll be, near the rope.  Hopefully they won't park a C-130 right in the middle of the field between us and the runway.

I was planning on 10AM-ish as well, although now that I know for sure that there are a couple P-40s already there, I may arrive earlier... I dunno.

Hope to see you there...

Re: Geneseo airshow...any one else going??

Here's some pix from Friday... shakedown on the new camera went fairly well, although I'm still re-learning alot after years of using a P&S POS.

By the way... that's not dust or dirt in this first shot... there were tons of swallows buzzing around everywhere early on. I'm surprised that only a couple showed up here... they were massing for a 1000 bird raid, I think...

Great pics, Steve.

I can't wait to see the ones you took on Saturday... Especially since my camera "soiled the sheets." Wink [;)]

Sorry to hear about your camera, dude... that sux.

Here's a few from early in the morning on Saturday...

The ubiquitous Texans and Harvards... they usually outnumber any other type on the field at most any airshow you might go to. Because of this, some folks think of them as boring, but I rather like 'em...

Sleeping Hawks...

John Fallis' recently restored P-40N... this Hawk is a genuine combat veteran and saw service with the 49th FG in the PTO.

Every now and again I like to give certain shots that vintage look...

All in all, 'twas a good two days. On Friday I met up with Wayne and his entourage, and we spent a lovely half hour or so under the port wing of the P-40M 'The Jacky C II' trying to stay dry during a monsoon-ish deluge. We were quite unsuccessful...

Thankfully that was the only instance of rain on Friday, other than a drizzly morning. But I can scratch off one pair of sneakers. There's nothing quite like walking in water.

I also met up with a few friends from another forum on Friday, one of whom came all the way from Texas. I hung out with them on and off during the day, and they almost convinced me to stick around for the chicken dinner. I was tempted... I'll have to plan next year a bit better and maybe camp like we used to do back in the day.

On Saturday I arrived at 6AM. And although there was no rain early on, the field was soaking wet. Scratch another pair of sneakers. I saw Justen briefly... sorry I didn't stick around too long, guy. I was feeling worse than I looked. And I look and feel even worse today... sun-poisoning me thinks.

Anyhoo, I'm glad I didn't go out again today, as the reports on the HAG message board painted a lousy, wet picture. Wish I coulda stuck around yesterday to grab some good evening shots without the crowd around, but it wasn't to be. Next year perhaps...

Re: Geneseo airshow...any one else going??

I went on saturday, got there around 10ish due to some unforeseen family issues. I'll try to get my pics up today or tommorrow. I still had a really good time and still wouldnt have missed it but I was a little disapointed. There wasnt too much flying on saturday as usual, cost of aviation gas I assume has alot to do with I suppose. There wasnt as many P-40's as I thought there was going to be there. There was only 5 of the 12 or so I expected. Bummer but oh well. The F-16 flying with the P-40 was pretty cool, I got some good pictures of that! I didnt end getting inside the memphis belle like I wanted to, the line was a mile long for her. I said I was going to go back later but didnt, my dad wasnt feeling to good and my son was getting really tired and winey.

I wanted to buy a plane or two from the show but didnt. There was a die cast B-17 marked as liberty Belle that I wanted to buy. Stupid me said I'll come back and get it later, came back and it was gone! I was mad at my self for that, should of got when I had it in my hand. I'll find it online. And thank god I didnt go on sunday, northing but rain! I dont think anything flew till later in the day.
