New look coming soon to the forums
Posted by Megan McChain on Monday, November 30, 2009 8:58 AM

Hey everyone-

If you haven’t heard already, FineScale.com is getting a whole new look. Along with the new and improved site, our forums also will be getting an exciting upgrade. New features to look forward to include sending private messages as conversations, the option to create friendships with fellow forum members, the ability to make announcements in your profile, and much more!

If you were along for the ride for our last forum update, don’t fret: You will not have to re-register. Everyone’s account, along with all old posts, will transfer over. However, if you are having problems with the new forums, such as a forgotten password or questions about the new features, be sure to contact our customer service center.

Stay tuned. When the switch to the new and improved system happens, we will post detailed instructions on how to use some of the new features. There also will be a helpful FAQ page.

When you notice the change, be sure to check out the new FineScale.com. Along with a new layout and easier navigation, the new site will include many new features, such as a database of helpful modeling kits, how-to videos, and FSM Insider, featuring editor commentaries and exclusive video tips.

Is there any possibility of including a spell-checker among the forthcoming upgrades?  I brought that subject up in another thread; there were several positive responses and no negative ones.

Hope the new site is as easy to use as this old one is. Computer dummies like me don't make out too well with big changes. You know the book "Computers for Dummies"? It's too advanced for me.Confused [%-)]

Jim-

Don't worry. We're here to make this transition as smooth as possible. I think the new format and new features are great and I'm really excited for the updated forums. We've created an FAQ page with lots of information and we're always here to answer questions. Stay posted!

The upgrade will happen within the next few weeks. We will post something here a few days before the upgrade.

I'm hoping for improved thread/post management, such as keeping better track of read/unread posts and being able to look at new posts since your last visit. Better searching and retrieval of older posts would also be great. Change can be good!

Basically, you'll get the same functionality the forum currently has plus a ton of new features like what you've described above. The new platform is really amazing.

Stay tuned!

I cant wait, but then, im of the electronic generation, everything going in leaps and bounds.  I cant wait till im in my 80s I cant imagine what our technology will be like.

tangent aside, something I would like is an option to search for threads that a specific person started and not threads included in it.

Like... I search for an old thread, not only do I have to weed through all the old threads in the search function, but every old thead and every post to those threads, gets tedious.

Anxiously awaiting the new and improved site. Sounds good. Especially more features with the forums. I've found the forums an valuable source for inspiration, ideas and new techniques, as well as sharing a normally solitary hobby with friends from around the globe with many of the same intrests.

Matt-Kudos on the finest scale modeling magazine. It's always a great day to come home from work and find the latest issue in the mailbox. Definately an "ALRIGHT!!!" moment. I just wish I didnt read through it so fast. Oh well, leaves more time for building and going over the issue 2,3,4,more times before the day is done. Learned much from FSM. Thank you.

I don't like this new layout. I cant see all the categories anymore  instead there all separate links, and I have to click on menus etc. and everything is jumbled together

maybe its just me but if its not easy to look at and navigate  I probably wont use it as much

Sorry, I like the old way better.  Forum moves a lot slower and I liked the old layout.  Guess it never hurts to try something new but no need to fix something that wasn't broke.

Man you said it !  All this just to stick a few adds in our face I guess. I don't want to look at ttankratzz ad all day. This thing is running slow. The text is small now. The name is gone from next to the posts. You can no longer go to any forum from Any page. Content is missing/limited. Not needed, Dont like, Not happy

I'm also not sure if I like it yet. May take some getting used to.

There is a valid point in fixing something that's not broken.  I just made a post on my Witchcraft thread and I miss when I post , the automatic return to the page of the post you just made. Also having the page number at top and bottom of the page .

All said I like the old look better, but like the new features such as the video how to. How about some how tos for the more advanced modeler.

To my fellow scale builders lets work with FSM and give the new look a chance. Remember when trying a new technique? Sometimes takes a bit of refinement and getting used to it.

The only thing I like is the addition of the quick-reply; although to be honest, it too is less than overwhelming in the fact that it is a flash to a popup.

Pretty lame FSM. This site now leads in the WORST designed user forum, and WORST motivation for upgrade, of all of the internet modelling forums. What a joke. Thanks for sticking the enormous banners and adds all over every viewable page now. Guess its pretty easy to see where your motivations for this came from.

The design is so cluttered, its a demotivation to actually visit the site at all.

Ditto! (shucks, we no longer have that smilie) Get rid of the banner ad on the side and put it either at the top or bottom FSM!!! Geez!

These smilies suck, what the hell is this one? a zombie.....Right Hug

The new look is good, but here's my only gripe. on the old site, in each catagory, you saw what the lastest post was. So even if I don't like ships, I may see something that catches my interest. IT's also a bit hard to get around, as the sub-menus keep getting in my way. It's a bit harder to navigate. I think we'll live, but I dunno... maybe if the navigation was a bit easier...

Yep, and any newbie coming here looking for modeling advice is going to have to sift through all that, too.

Hate the new forums, Period.

I don't understand why people want to change something that is working, for no reason other than for improvement, when in reality it slows things down or just sucks in general.

Something I miss a great deal is previewing a post with images and actually seeing the images in the preview.

Sure is frustrating when posting a series WIP pics in a build thread or a 'how to' series of pics and you can't remember which image number is which.

You end up commenting on how you ran brake lines on the landing gear while everyone see's an image of the rudder.  Until you actually post , the images don't come on the screen , then where's the edit button.

I feel I need to write a script to make such a post now. Much easier to preview what pic is where in a post to connect the correct text with that pic(s).

I say bring back the old forums.
