                        How exactly do you send a PM to a member....is it the icon labeled "start a discussion?"

                        Click on the persons username and it will go to their profile. You will see the Start Conversations link. That's for PM's.

                        When you have received a PM, the Message icon on the right will show red.

                        I have a new friend but when I click on his profile, there is no "Start Conversation link". All my other friends have that link. What is causing this?

                        Russ, it is because that friend has set his conversation to "none". There are three settings; "all users", "friends only", and "none".
