I agree, good summary.  I am one of those with a color vision deficiency and have no trouble with green and grey, but I read that there were two greens.  Not to me.  But I don't know what any of the color variations mean so it doesn't bother me.  The site is so complex it seems like a forum section on instructions in use of the forum details would be useful.  Actually, there was some need for that with the old site, especially for new users.

I'm not sure that the site appears at all the same on different browsers.  My text area in Firefox or IE8 is the left 2/3 of the screen, ads on the right 1/3.  I do use the wheel to increase the text size if I see text that is hard to read, but I think there have been improvements in text size.

I am disappointed that there has been no response to my post here about posting pictures.  Maybe it's just a problem I'm having, but I think not.  I like the Fine Scale Modeler magazine, I think they do a service that is worthwhile to modeling.  But I think this forum is an asset to the magazine, in large part because the forum community enhances the standing and credibility of Fine Scale Modeler, and if the community here is discounted by lack of communication or care it can not be a good thing.  I try hard to be supportive and that should always be a two way street.  As usual, it's just as important how you do something as it is what you do.

I know the changes have just been introduced and time is needed to work all the bugs out, so I hope my comments are taken in the spirit they are given by one who wants to be part of the solution.

Rick, good summary, and you managed to do it without whining or resorting to threats about leaving the website! Kudos!!

I'm at the age where my vision is becoming impaired. While I can see far off things with perfect clarity, my arms are getting too short for reading. And I find the same thing with reading on the web.

I compensate for this by "zooming" in on the page. If you have a wheel mouse, hold down the Ctrl button while moving the wheel back and forth. That should zoom in and out on the web page, and I have mine adjusted so the post part is 2/3 of the screen size, and very readable.

So long folks!

My $0.02 on the new forum and web site - good & bad

Hi all,

It certainly is different in look and feel from the old forum design.  I can get used to different, although it may take a bit of time.

My main issues that do impact the ease of use and user experience are:

1. Speed.  As others have noted, there is a significant difference in load and response times.  That said, there has been some incremental improvement in the speed over the past few days.  Still not close to the old forum software, but an marginal improvement nonetheless.  I hope that the speed continues to improve.

2. Navigation.  I really liked the ability to see all at once all the sub-forums and the latest post in each.  This is clearly missing in the new forum design.

3. Use of screen real estate.  In a word, inefficient.  On my large monitor, the fact that the width of posts uses only about 1/3 of the screen width gives them a much more cramped feel and slightly increased difficulty in reading.

I didn't really use little graphic smileys and what-not, so no issue there.  I haven't tried to post a photograph or image, but I understand that this still requires a link to an external server such as Photobucket or the like.  My hope has always been a direct upload from my computer, but I understand that this would end up storing the image by the forum host, thus placing huge demands on storage capacity.

Most of the other things about the forum re-design I can live with.  Although not color blind myself, I can appreciate that the color, shade and contrast could have a major impact on usability for many folks.  This is certainly something that the fine folks at FSM should take a look at.

In terms of the non-forum parts of the web site, most of what I have seen is either a nice improvement or no worse than the old FSM web site.

My thanks to FSM for hosting the forums, and for their commitment to improving both the web site and forums, even if it doesn't always hit the mark for some folks.

Cheers, Rick
