A new weathering technique???
Posted by hispeed on Tuesday, May 14, 2013 10:32 PM

I am in the process of building Academy's 1/48 scale F-86F-30 and after my fourth screwup trying to get Future off the model so I could repaint it.  After sanding the Future off along with a little bit of the paint (I used Testor's red sanding paper and the original paint was Tamiya's flat aluminum), I thought it would be a good idea to prep the surface with Poly S Plastic Prep.  I sprayed in on  and watched as it left large areas of dull finish across the wing.  The finish varied depending on the amount of Future and paint left on the wing.

After looking at it for awhile (and muttering a few choice words), it struck me that the resultant finish sort of looked like some some of the planes I have seen at the Boneyard or on displays that have sat there for several years.  My question to the group is this:  Would this type of finish be of interest for modelers who want to build a very old worn out version of the aircraft?  Or is this something that someone has already discovered?

Finally, where and how can I post a photo of the condition?  Thanks.

  1. This works best if you open 2 windows: 1 in FSM and 1 in Imageshack, Photobucket, Dropbox, et al. Go to the photo site window and highlight and copy the “Direct Link” address. Go to the FSM widow containing your unfinished post. Go to the menu bar above your post, the icon that looks like a cellphone, the 2nd tier of the message control bar, the ELEVENTH icon  It says ‘Insert Media’… CLICK IT. Paste the Direct Link address into the appropriate space. Then hit insert.
  2. Wait for the FSM site to show the photo, etc. etc.
