New here - Critique
Posted by DanDonde on Monday, December 19, 2016 7:21 AM

Hi I'm Dan.

I'm new to this forum. I have been a model maker for around 25 years and have always built aircraft and armour. Recently I'd grown a little tired of the subject matter so fancied a change.

I've always been fascinated with the story of RMS Titanic and, as we just moved to a Victorian house, I thought I'd build a large scale model of her to compliment the house.

After some research I chose the Academy 1/400 kit and also purchase Eduards etch set to go with it.

Anyway, I have a few pictures of my build so far. All critique is welcome as ship modelling is very to me. I'm mostly concerned about the rigging! I'll upload them as soon as my membership trial period is up.

If you're interested to see my progress so far, I have a YouTube Channel where here is a video of the fist part of this build. You can get to it here - http://www.youtube.com/c/DanDondeModelling

I'd really welcome any advice and things to look out for when buildign a ship.

Thank you

Dan

Hi Dan, Welcome Sign

I'm a ship modeler who will take a brake with armor and aircraft. What concerns do you have with the rigging?

It just seems so complex! There are plans in the kit which aren't exactly that clear. I'm not a rivet counter by any means but I also want it to at least look correct. I've a feeling I'll utter some rude words during the riggin stage. Do ou use CA to fix the rigging points or any suggestions in keeping it taut?

Dan, a lot of guys use EZ-line or fly fishing line for the rigging, I prefer stretched sprue myself. I can vary the size of it from thick to the width of a hair.
Yes you attach whichever product you use with CA.
As far as references for the rigging, I will look up pictures of the subject. I have found the rigging changes as the ship goes through upgrades, however for the Titanic you should be able to find a vast amount of reference pictures. I don’t worry about getting everything perfect, unless it’s going to a museum no one will know the difference.

Thank you. I've noticed some rigging changes in my research but having not built a ship before I'm still a tad overwhelmed. I've got plenty of building left to do before I reach that stage but thank you for the advice and you're so correct, it needs to look 'right' not be a museum quality!

Hello!

Well, we had a baby which put the build on hold but here is the link to my second build video (it's shorter as I'd not got much done!)

Let me know what you think!

Welcome to the Forum, Dan! Nice work on Titanic. The detail and little PE parts are amazing.

Please excuse for my absence. Our little girl was born at the start of January and then I decided to build a bespoke desk in my modelling room so I've been a bit pre-occupied! (link to video of the desk build - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-FTZGUFLp8U )

Anyway, here are some recent pictures of this build. I have also run into an issue. Now the three decks are together and the superstructure sides are in place the entire assembly has a bend in it. Now normally I can get around this but as it's fully assembled and painted I have backed myself into a corner. When I put the assembly onto the hull the two ends meet but the centre part stands a good 1cm clear. Its s solid that it requires a LOT of pressure to correct which I just can't see glue and clamping solving. Any ideas are very much appreciated!

Thanks and I'll update this post again soon.

Hi Dan,

I would have to see the assembly. Did you post this problem in the ships area? There are several members there that would have an answer for you.

Go ahead and start a WIP thread as there as well so others can follow along.

Hi Dan ;

Welcome first and foremost to the best bunch of plastic and resin crunchers around ( My opinion anyway ). Now you asked for a critique ? Be careful what you ask for here .

I don't pull punches as I love ships and anything to do with them . Captained the real ones ( Tankers ) when they were small city blocks that couldn't do the canal . You think parking a Buick was hard . Try to parallel park one of those beasts LOL.LOL. We will be glad to help in any way we can . Tanker - Builder

Hey !

If your pieces are doing the bridge curve thing try this . Keep it clamped , Put fresh liquid glue on the parts rather heavy and put a weight in the middle until it slowly gets straight .

This can work , But If you can , and the joints are somewhat soft seperate them and do it over .

Thank you for the advice

I hope this picture link works https://drive.google.com/open?id=1nXTdYD3J7lHwby4o4w5SAMA7QZExRpCxwg

The force needed to make the two parts meets is a great deal. I c't see where I've gone wrong as the superstructure is perfectly level.
