Thanks, Baron - I think I've more or less got a handle on the paints now (it took a while!) although I'm still experimenting with thinners, cleaners etc., especially with airbrushing. I have to admit that lacquers are a bit daunting, so I think I'll gently work up to those! I seem to remember using some paint in the 70s - I'm a 1962 model - on a 1/35 Dodge weapons carrier, and being pleasantly surprised at the superb coverage and total lack of brush marks, as good a finish as airbrushing. The paint came in little square bottles, I think - were they Pactra? I find Vallejo Model Air gives a similar finish but is nothing like as robust and, of course, that's using an airbrush.
I still have a stock of Humbrol enamels from mumble-mumble years ago and they are still usable, although I only use them for detail painting now.

Yeah, that's a good question We had them when I was a kid, too (b 1964), they just weren't as common as enamels or lacquers.
If you do a search, you'll find at least one discussion that explains the difference between acrylics and enamels. It has to do with the chemistry, but I don't remember enough to be able to explain it. Just remember-"acrylic" does not mean "water-based", though many acrylics are.
And what was really puzzling is that Pactra made "acrylic enamels" that were water-based!

I've been doing figures for decades now but just got back into plastic modeling in the last couple of years too. The plethora of new finishing techniques is what got me into it again. It's downright artistic! So, I'm hooked all over again!

Hello, everyone - I have been hovering about these pages for a while, and decided to join in the fun. I am a fairly recently (18 months or so) returning modeller, and have now just about absorbed the massive changes I have missed in the intervening years. I had previously worked with a DIY-type craft knife, sandpaper from my Dad's workshop, tubes of polystyrene cement (either Britfix or Airfix's own brand with a snap-off seal at the end of the tube!), and paint was either Airfix enamel or Humbrol enamel. Filler was an expensive luxury, and an airbrush was something only the impossibly wealthy could aspire to. A stash of kits was unheard of - if you had one, you built it!
When I discovered an old, unfinished kit from my youth, it reawakened the urge to build, so I started reading up on what was new - I was stunned! Acrylic paints - what are they? What's this - pre-cut painting masks for canopies? What's this photo-etch stuff? I'm - obviously - still finding my way in all this, but still have the basic skills I learned as a lad. I hope I will soon be able to contribute to these pages, as well as learn from them.
