My Planned Year Was a Bust
Posted by Ron Dog on Saturday, July 18, 2020 1:41 PM

A trip to Hawaii, 5 concerts, 10 racing weekends....didn't happen.

But, a return to modelling was just what the doctor ordered.

Typical story...started late sixties/early seventies, gave it up for college/marriage/career.  Made a brief return a dozen years ago, but then went all in on a new business venture and had no time.  Kept reading FSM, though.

Then, with Covid, suddenly nothing to do on weekends, so dived back in.

Tamiya 1/48 RAF Mustang III:  Sitting in a drawer since 2008, major assembly done, needed paint.  Will the dozen year old Model Master stuff work?  Yes!   Dozen year old Tamiya acrylics?  Not so much.  Using for washes.  Got the painting done, decided not to use the provided decals for the wing leading edges.  Taped, sprayed, pulled off tape, wing root glue and decals came up with tape.  Back into drawer...but not for long.

Hasegawa 1/48 Hurricane 1:  Dozen year old kit.  Fussy alignment of seat angle led to wing roots not fitting.  Pulled it apart, realigned, put back together.  Still big step at wing root.  Grrr.  Into drawer...but not for long!

Italieri Spitfire Mk IX American Aces 1/48:  Loved the decal and camo selections. Small parts count, looked like a simple build.  And it was!  Needed a little parts clean up, but no drama.  Just what I needed.  Major build done, azure blue sprayed and drying before I start the top camo....sweet!

Now working on all three of the above.   All should be done within ten days.

Kits in the stash, all 1/48:  Tamiya P47D Razorback.  Airfix RAF Tomahawk II.  ICM A-26B (saw one in person at March AFB Museum- truly gorgeous lines!).  Eduard Spitfire Mk IX (planning on using American Aces decals for Gabrinski).  Tamiya Beaufighter.

And on the shelf from 1970-71: Airfix 1/72 Spitfire airfield set (canopy missing and instructions missing :<).  Nichimo 1/30 Tiger (barely started in 1970- just axles placed- will finish someday).  A Heller Alize kit of unknown scale (souvenir of a 1971 Paris trip).

Enjoying it immensely, even the disasters.

Welcome to the Forums! Welcome back to the hobby! Glad to have you with us.

It's always a little tough getting back after a long hiatus. Just hang in there and things will get better. If you have any problems, just holler, that's what we're here for. The members are very knowledgeable and ready to help.

I've been building for 73 of my 79 years and never stopped. I build whatever strikes my fancy at the time and my wallet says OK.Wink My favorites are WWI & WWII planes with Sailing Ships coming in a close second. But, you name it and I've probably built a few of them over the years.

I think many of us have similar stories to share, and we should.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Thanks for the welcome!

The experience is a little odd...since I've been keeping up with FSM, I know what to do in my head, but I lack the actual experience of having done it.  So, in between newbie gaffs (whoda thunk that fresh masking tape would pull apart a ten year old glue job!), little parts of the projects actually look kinda nice.

Hi;

In the future on a much older model, do this. When you are applying ANY kind of tape run the strip of tape between two clean fingers, lightly. That will tone down the "Sticky", but still result in a good "stick" at the edges.
