Welcome to the hobby and to the forum, Jack!

I'll second Tamiya.  The F4F kit is a nice one.

I'll also suggest some classic Monogram kits, like the P-40B, the P-51B, or the P-47D razorback.  They're relatively simple kits that won't fight you, and they can be finished into attractive models.  You might find some of the more recent boxings left over on shelves at places like HobbyTown, Michael's, or HobbyLobby, but you can get one second-hand on eBay and elsewhere online.

Hi;

 I would definitely go Tamiya! I have built more of their kits than I thought Possible. And that was just matching my old Monogram stuff. Great Kits!

Welcome.  If in 1/48, take a look at the airfix newer release of the P51 and P40.  Have both and the fit is good on both.  Will second Tamiya stuff as well.

Of the two, go with Tamiya.  At least their own products.  Tamiya will repackage other manufacture's goods.   Tamiya is well engineered.  Parts go together with a minimum of fuss.   Not a lot of small parts for parts sake

Hasegawa is generally good, but many of their offerings are older and updated with new decals    Ordnance is often an aftermarket purchase

I have been impressed with Academy's multi-color plastic (MCP) kits   Think of them as an advanced snap-tite kit   Well engineered with large locating tabs that make for good fit   Careful though when test fitying, parts snap together and you may have trouble separating them

Hi from the NW burbs of Chicago-I've been retired for just a year and looking to get into model building. I'm especially interested in WW2 and later military aircraft. For a first-timer[other than kits done as a child],I'm curious which maker [Tamiya,Hasegawa,etc] would be a good first effort? TIA
