Coming back to the forum...need help!

Hi all,

 

Coming back from a long time away from the forum and I need help.

I have almost 400 kits in my stash and I have modelling paralysis, depression, perectionism etc.  I start a kit, get so far, then it stalls; mostly around painting or a bad fit on something.

I need some support, ideas and god knows what else. 

 

1) Pick one kit. 

2) Take deep breath and say out loud to yourself 100 times, "No matter WHAT this kit looks like when I'm done, I will NOT stop until it's done!"

3) Short of Heaven, perfection is not attainable in this world. Quit making that your goal. My best kit I ever did still has visible flaws and I won a second place medal for it. 

4) Relax. It's just a hobby. 

I agree with Straycat1911,  this is supposed to be a hobby.  It's supposed to be fun and relaxing. If you are having issues with a kit, post a message and someone will try to give you ideas on how to fix the issue.  Lastly,  Join one of the Group Builds, it might give you extra motivation and enjoyment.  HTH & Happy Modeling.

Or not, forcing yourself to do anything isn't fun either.

In addition to the great advice you have already gotten, if you have any newer Tamiya kits in your stash, start with those.  You'll be able to sharpen your skills and techniques without pulling your hair out over someone's crappy engineering.  Each time you run into an issue with a Tamiya, you'll be able to say "OK...do it this way instead next time" because its rarely going to be problems with fit with those.  Your first ones will come out looking a little rough, but they'll get better and better and your confidence (and contentment with modeling) will improve.  After you get a few good ones under your belt, you'll have the strength to take on some of the bad ones in your stash.

I find that watching videos on the subject from real world stuff to other builders taking a shot at a kit or subject gets the juices flowing for me. After awhile of watching others I get the super itch to get one done for me and off I go. I always finish every kit no matter the challange, its my nature. I am as stuburn as they get, ask my wife.

Till not so long ago I was in the very same situation you are in it seems.  I hadn't finished a kit in years, really... probably in over decade.

And then finally in November 2020 I started a cardboard kit for my wife (you can find the buildlog on this forum ; it's the Central Pacific °60 Jupiter) and guess what ; I didn't give up, and I finished it somewhere in April 2021 and a few months later I actually also finished making the rails on which the model is displayed... by the end of 2021 I had no less than four finished models : the Jupiter of course, MPC's Space 1999 Eagle, Revell's 1/72 Haunebu II and one of those old Revell's 1/72 Fokker E.III Eindeckers.

The trick I discovered ?  Don't try to make a perfect model for a paying customer when you are building a kit for your own pleasure...
