aircraft modeler checking in
Posted by Brhino on Tuesday, January 11, 2022 2:31 PM

Hi Everyone,

These forums have shown up multiple times when I researched questions that came up when I worked on my models, so I figured I'd join up so I could ask some questions of my own.

I built airplanes.  I had a collection of mostly 1:48 kits as a kid that looked like a kid built them, and all found their way to the trash when I moved out of my parents' house.  Much later I picked up the hobby again, and I decided to switch to 1:72 scale and attempt to build an example of every pursuit/fighter aircraft that's done operational duty in the US military starting with the opening of hostilities in World War 2.  It's a project that's in its third decade now.  I didn't find much time for modeling after my kids were born, but they don't need so much attention these days so I have more time to sneak down to the basement and do some gluing and painting.

Looking forward to meeting people and hopefully getting some expert opinions on some things!

Welcome back to the hobby and welcome to the forum, BR!  I look forward to seeing your builds!

Best regards,

Welcome.  I've had a lot of help and tips from the great folks here.

If you want to post pics, you need to host on a third party site, and pull them over from there.  Lots of choices for that, some fee based and some free.

Thanks for the welcome, everyone.

Goldhammer88, your point about image hosting is appreciated.  Makes me remember a few years ago when photobucket abruptly changed its rules and prevented direct linking (unless you paid a lot!).  That absolutely destroyed years of photojournaling I'd been doing related to my other hobby, aquariums.

I went to college at the U of Michigan, one town over, but housing is much cheaper in Ypsilanti so I live here.  We've got a couple pretty good hobby shops to choose from as well.

I'll share a couple photos of my collection.  I'm not overly proud of the quality I create, certainly not compared to a lot of examples I see on here and elsewhere around the web.  For me, if I stressed too much about a slightly sloppy canopy frame paint job or a decal a millimeter or two out of position, I wouldn't be able to enjoy the hobby.  I'm an engineer by trade so all of my interest in absolute precision gets used up at work.

Here's the Air Force / Army fighters:

And here are the Navy planes:

(ugh the color really washed out on that photo... and you can really see the dust!)

I've also been working on bombers. I wanted to build the B-17G Yankee Lady that frequently flies right over my house, and then she ended up with a whole squadron of friends.

As you can see, my collection lives in my unfinished basement.  It's not optimal display conditions but it does mean I can hang as many planes as I want and nobody else in the house can complain!

Who keeps stepping on wings?  Someone won't stay off the wings and now I have to apply all these tiny "NO STEP" decals.

I've been staring at the "Member Since August 2015" label next to my name.  Apparently I actually joined 7 years ago, started one thread, and promptly forgot!  Oops.

Also - there doesn't seem to be a way to make a new post to a thread other than replying directly to someone.  That seems a bit odd - sometimes you want to update a thread without actually responding to someone else in particular.  Am I missing something?

You can just reply to update the thread.

If you want to reply to a specific post, click reply and select quote. Move curser to a new line and go to it. You can even decide how much you quote but backspacing out what you don't want.

Actually it's easier than that.

Choose reply, then highlight the parts you are responding to, then choose 'add quote".

Welcome to the forums.  You'll get all the help and info you request from these guys.  I was looking at your A.S. section and noticed the F-106 from the 5th F.I.S. form Minot A.F.B..  I diid two years with them in operations and helped design the new markings when we picked up the F-15A/B/s in the 80s.

We also had some T-33s that we used for various missions.

Enjoy yourself here, the company is great.

It's a good looking scheme!  Easy to see why Hasegawa used it.  I get why everything's low-observable grey now but some of the paint jobs they used to get away with are much more fun.

The intercepter squadrons kept their high visibility solors until the very last.  The paint job we did on the F-15 was a comprimise because we had to keep the aircraft in its original colors.  The other two squadrons, the 48th and 318th F.I.S. had slightly brighter squadron markings and I think they shut down around the same time the 5th did.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but did you know Italeri liked your paint scheme so much that they issued their 1:72 T-33 in it?

I thought about looking for something in bare metal, but now I know the man behind the design I'm definitely going to build it this way!

Have a nice day

Paweł

Hey Pawel, when did that come out?  We''re kind of in the dark sometimes and with only one store in town, sometimes I miss thhings.  Like that.

Looks like it's a 2020 rerelease.  I was going to mention it having a bare metal finish whereas the real one in your photo is light grey, but I checked out the instructions and it calls out flat light grey.  I guess the box cover artist missed a memo about that.

Well Hello!

Welcome Back to the hobby. There is so much out there now I am glad I have limited space. All my planes Flew Away(sic.) in a Tornado. Most were the Big Monogram Bombers.
