My daughter attends USC so we will be staying in her apt. Too bad they didn't pick Greenville in the Upstate.

A local organizing committee has to bid for it.  It is not given blindly.   If you want it to come to your area YOU must actively pursue it,  get your local IPMS club or clubs together and prepare a bid.

The bid(s) for 2017 will be heard & awarded at the 2015 convention.    If no one out west has started their bid prep -- then it is likely already too late.     You have to have the hotel & convention site firmed up and a rough idea of theme and potential side activities.

When I was part of the 2000 Dallas committee we started planning in 1997.  The bid was awarded in 1998

Yes, I realize that it must be bid for. I hang out with the directors from our Chapter from time to time and get to hear the scuttlebutt about such things. Just like most everything else in life, it does involve politics, shall we say. Our Chapter, IPMS Orange County, hosted 2007.  2010 was Phoenix AZ, and 2013 was Loveland CO. In past years there was a tendency to rotate between the East, Center, and West of the nation. Of course based on bids from those areas. The past three years have been all in the Eastern portion of the nation- VA and SC are Eastern Seaboard, and  OH is neither west of the Mississippi nor the Continental divide, so really not in the center either. Perhaps no chapter west of either one of those geographic landmarks has not bid to host since then. But somehow I suspect that is not the case.

Seattle spring model show is slightly bigger than the nationals and very full of competition in the detail department.

Not sure what you're inferring to when you say 'politics', but if a club doesn't self-nominate/bid for a convention then they have nothing to complain about. As a former Nats committee member, I can tell you the task is daunting and takes strong leadership and dedication. The biggest obstacle most clubs face is the manpower - lots of people are needed for the various jobs. Even though we have a fairly large club, we heavily relied on members from other clubs to help out. If a club is considering hosting a National convention, I recommend forming a small steering group to do a feasibility study. Be honest with yourself on resources and expectations.

The "politics" of the clubs that are putting their bid up for consideration to the powers that be for hosting the Nationals. I know that it is just hearsay, so to speak, as I was not there to be a part of witness the actual events, but the impression around here is that the Las Vegas chapter (not the local Chapter, but one we were rooting for, due to proximity) went up against a pre determined "not gonna happen" in their bid for 2017. I have not heard yet about the Phoenix pitch for the same bid, but obviously it was unsuccessful as well.  Phoenix has an obvious proven track record for hosting nationals, and I suspect that Vegas would have put on a nice show... Ah well... maybe in 2018 somewhere the West will be the host.

Might want to double check that. From what I understand the only two bids put in this year were Phoenix and Omaha. Can anyone else verify LV put in a bid?

Next chapter meet ill speak with the folks who passed that on. Perhaps I'm mistaken and they were bidding for 2018. But as told, Las Vegas put in a bid for a Nationals.

One of the members of the local organizing committee posted on Hyperscale that the convention center was not affected by the storm & flooding and that they actually held a function in the center during the height of the event.

My daughter goes to USC in Columbia and lives in Lexington down the road from Columbia. She said the same thing. It's a hit and miss on some areas, but the flooding was incredible, getting somethin like 20 inches of rain within a day or so. This was called a storm that happens every 1,000 years.

I join here in seattle back in 2014,  i had just got back into building, did not know that much about ipms and convention's, shows. I found out about the Nationals early in 2015,  found out later that year that Seattle lost the bid for 2017. I for one love the idea of a potenial show coming to Seattle. I would throw my hat in. For 2016, its not going to happen, for me to attend this year.

I just decided yesterday to go to the SC nationals.  That's when I learned that while I could get the first two days at the convention rate of $129, Friday night the price went up to $270 because all the slots are filled.  My fault for waiting so long.

Try looking in other hotels, West Columbia and Lexington is nearby and probably cheaper.
