Shipping build up
Posted by stikpusher on Sunday, November 30, 2014 12:59 AM

Every other day I ride my bicycle, usually along the coast for a good portion of my ride. for the past month or so I have noticed a large amount of container ships sitting offshore, almost all packed high with containers. So daily I began to count them. The lowest I have counted on one day is 8, and the most is 14. Recently I came across some news articles placing the explanation for the cargo bottleneck on various reasons, the longshoremen, a glut of shipping arriving at once, a lack of available trucking to remove cargo from the docks.

http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/11/12/us-usa-ports-westcoast-idUSKCN0IW05V20141112

Apparently the local docks (Los Angeles/Long Beach) handle a major percentage of incoming cargo from the Far East. So if anybody here is wondering where the latest release from your favorite Far Eastern model company is, there is a good bet that it is sitting offshore here on the water, waiting to offload.

I took this shot of some idle shipping on Tuesday... there are 8 visible in this shot.... I got a flat on my bike and had some time to kill while I waited for a ride to pick me up and get the flat repaired...

Imagine being on Storage Wars and finding one with tons of cardboard boxes filled with kits none of the other bidders knew what they are.

Nice view Stick,

I used to be a truck driver, and it is a serious pain in the ___ to get into and out of a harbor dock to pick up a container. Most driver just won't do it any more. Plus you need clearance now a days just to get to the docks. Not that that's a bad thing, just a pain.

This delay actually screwed up a concert that my band was supposed to play in Tokyo in October. We had to reschedule the date because our equipment could not get there in time for the festival show. We wound p playing three weeks later.

Really now? So it's affecting outbound cargo (which I understnad is of a lower volume) as well as inbound cargo?

I just like that you get to ride your bike every day.  I ride, too, but it's too cold and days are too short here in the Northeast, to get out now.  The next season won't start till late March, at the earliest.  I wish you smooth roads and no mechanicals!

Many thanks for the well wishes Baron! I ride every other day,(weights on most of the off days) but it's raining out today, so with the drivers around here, that is not conducive to safety and survival... On days that I work I use the stationary bicycle in our gym, but no such luck for me today... not that a stationary bike compares to the real thing...

This is off topic, but. to me, that is a great picture of the beach. I really miss living close to the beach and the smell of the salt water.

You're a luck man Stik! Big Smile

I saw an item on the TV news yesterday that's probably related to this topic. Due to a slowdown in imports of American potatoes, McDonald's restaurants in Japan are rationing French fries.

I heard this news too, and wondered if it was related to this issue as well... Yes

Last week on my ride I counted the largest number of ships that I have seen out there yet... 28! I felt like the PBY pilot in "Midway", "Howie... it's the whole damn Jap navy!"

Today on my ride I counted 21 outside the breakwater waiting to come in and unload. Plus I would estimate another 6 or so inside the breakwater but not at the docks loading or unloading... So I had to stop and take a couple of photos...

of course the shipping out there now is probably Japanese, Chinese, Korean, and from Lord knows where else...

DD, I may be crazy, but the day before yesterday I was finally able to fit into one of my original issue sets of BDUs from 1983 for the first time in many years... with the small waistline!... there is a method to my madness! No, I can not see the ocean from my house (unless perhaps if I stood  on the 2nd story roof)... I'm a few miles from the water, and not on high ground... and unless I am physically no longer able, I am not giving up my beach rides for anything my friend ;) You're welcome to join me anytime.

If I'm ever out your way, Stik, I would be honored to ride along with you. I do have a recumbent trike that I would love to ride along the beach. A bad back and bad right hip keep me from doing what I love most - running. And bikes ain't too good for my bad back, either. But that recumbent trike.... ahhhhhhh. Nice and comfortable. Plus, it has the added advantage of working abdominal muscles that I didn't even know I had!

Glad to hear that you're able to fit in to your old BDUs. I recently tried to fit into my old Dress Blues, and had a three inch gap between all the buttons!! And that was AFTER sucking in my belly as far as I could!! Heehee!! When I got out of the Corps back in July 1995, I weighed 155lbs. I now weigh 180, and have no muscle whatsoever to show for it. None of my old uniforms come even close to fitting. Well, except for my cover (hat). It still fits....once I get a haircut....

I hear ya there. Between Running, Jumping, and Humping, my knees and lower back (and all the excess weight I put on) are not what they used to be... So I rediscovered my joy of cycling a few years ago... now it has become almost obsessive at times... pushing myself farther and faster... I see quite a few of those trikes out there on my rides and several other types of contraptions as well. I know what a cover is... LOL!  This area is too steeped in Marine types for far too long not to know the terminology ... An old Amtrac Driver from the Vietnam era lives across the street and my oldest daughter is engaged to an Afghan Marine vet... I suppose that's one of the reasons I went to the Army... Pendleton is just an hour away and the old MCASs of Tustin and El Toro even closer...

Have you disowned that oldest daughter yet, seeing as how the fiance ain't Army?  Propeller Big Smile

Arthritis is the big thing taking out my back and hip. Hope that it never happens to you, Stik. It is a very uncomfortable disease, and slowly gets worse as you age. The trike does help with the discomfort, though.

I'll try to post a picture of the trike soon. You'd like it - I have a 2x3 USMC flag on a 3' flex pole on it for max visibility. Everyone in the neighborhood knows when the Gyrene is riding the streets!

My oldest's political views after attending UCLA are more likely to get her disowned by me than her fiancée's choice in armed services. Anybody who signs on the dotted line to put their hindquarters in harms way is ok in my book.... at least to a certain extent. No arthritis for me... I sure do hope that it does not develop. I have enough other looming issues. I am glad to hear that your trike helps. I like that you fly your colors. good man ;)

TB -

Tell me about it! When I was 19 dating a 17 year high school darling, I brought her home and she asked to meet her parents. Sure enough, her dear old dad sitting in kitchen cleaning his shotgun... LOL!
