Flat Bottoms and Nylon carpet .
Posted by tankerbuilder on Thursday, July 2, 2015 3:14 PM

I remember flat bottoms . Ninety percent of my Revell fleet had them ! Funny though , even at the young age of 10 , I never wanted to play with them after building them .  All I wanted to do is lie on the nylon carpet and with my chin cradled , watch " Sea Power " And all those ships fighting .

I was a weird kid .Why? Well , I always got my homework done before Dad got home from work ! Then I could build models , read , watch the television or go outside and get together with my friends and our four refrigerator crates ,  New refrigerators were delivered in light wooden crates then .

They could be our subs from the " Silent Service " or the Nautilus from Jules Vernes "Disney Version " ) 20,000 leagues Under the Sea . With a working Periscope made from Quaker Oats small cardboard cans and some small mirrors . And lotsa " Duck " tape .

On the destroyer deck we built a bridge that was strong enough it didn't crush the box below . We would do a torpedo run on that Enemy cruiser and fire our cardboard and two by four guns at them in passing . Then wash up for dinner . Quiet time while Parents reviewed our homework  Well , mine did anyway !

You know , I believe we went through a whole box of Band-Aids that summer learning how sharp a saw was on skin .Oh , But did we have fun . ! You Bet !  Many's the night I fell asleep on that Nylon carpet watching  Those W.W. 2 and Korean War related programs and of course any Science Fiction that had Space Ships in it !  With a bowl of Jello Instant Pudding beside me .( the big mixing bowl size - Butterscotch -Of course !  )              Tanker - Builder

I grew up pretty much the same way, just not many other kids around (we were 4 miles out of town and not any other kids within about a mile).  You just stopped the blood flow and kept going.  I remember one time I was climbing a row of pine trees just inside the fence (field fence on steel "T" posts and a strane of 4 barb on top.  We (nephew and I) were shifting from one tree to the next working our way down the line, about 20 feet off the ground, and the branch was a little thin and gave under me....came down at mach speed and put a double scratch on my belly-still have the scart as a reminder of how close I came to doing major damage......

Today any of that would get you jailed for abuse, endangerment and neglect, and the kids taken by children's services..........

I was living in Norway for a month at the age of 12, as a come along friend of a kid I liked whose parents were overseas.

We got to tussling too much for their liking, so the dad, who owned a ship company, sent me off for five days on a coastal mail boat, round trip last day by train.

Time of my life, eating with the other couple of passengers and watching the cargo operation 2-3 times a day. A tractor here, bunch of drums of oil there. Slept in a cabin with a sloping wall that had two or three other guys who came and went all of the time on watches.

When I got home I told my mom about it. She nearly drove off the road!

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Pfffttt... I fell out of a tree and was bleeding all over my arms and legs (I was wearing shorts at the time) and walked home. My mom didn't freak out but kinda almost fainted at the bloody sight I was in. LOL! Needless to say, she helped clean me up and back outside I went and climbed that tree again. That's called having fun in the summertime!
