Can't say that I've done that with a model kit....but I did sell a 12ga slug gun (rifled barrel, bolt action) that I regretted selling....6-7 years ago. Finally found another for a decent price, just a few months ago. I also traded in a guitar as partial payment for another guitar. It was about 2 years later that I decided I regretted trading it off. Happened to go into a pawn shop a few months later, just to see what they had....they had MY guitar....I bought it again. Lost money on that whole deal!

At least it's kits and not classic cars...that'd be some cash.

Yes, I've had kits I bought when new, then got rid of only to obtain it once again. I usually sold it for more than what I paid, and then bought another at a bargain.

Eric, you're not alone in this.  For me it was a Monogram Skyraider.  Bought it with every intention of building it but I just never got around to it.  I sold it so I could purchase another kit I had my eye on.  After "seller's remorse" set in, I went out and purchased the same Skyraider kit!

5000 kits and counting......

I only started a Stash in 2014 in prep for retirement. I Liked 1/400 and 1/500 scale...

Had a Heller Hipper (sold it). Realized I really wanted the Heller one after all. Went and bought another at twice the price.   'Course it had several sets of PE included but whatawaste of Money. Last year I almost dumped my Nichimo Graf Spee, then I remembered Admiral Hipper. Yea, Once is enough- never sell your stash.

No not with kits but regret selling to this day my 1955 Chevy 2d hard top. I miss my classic bow tie. 

Did your 1955 Chevy 2door have that awesome "Pedestrian Impaler", the sleek looking Jet Hood ornament? My Father had a 53-56ish Ford Courier with a "Jet" too . I thought that was the coolest thing. Sorry for your Loss. Jim.

Nope, never had a problem selling a kit and buying another example later, because I only accumulate them, and don't sell them   I do have a problem buying multiple examples of the same kit, or same subject across manufacturers.

Yup. It's like hooking up with an old girlfriend. The fancy box art grabs ya, but when you crack the plastic off of it for a second time, the realization of what a dog of a kit is was comes rushing back. Makes me hate myself every time.

I have done that too Don. It's hard, but probably the right decision.

My problem is that I get the aircraft bug. I love them, just never build them. I built many of the Monogram kits, alas, just built without paint when I was a kid. Now I have the bug, again, to build props, because I think I can build them faster then armor, because of less parts. LOL

Anyone have an issue buying a kit, only to sell it, and end up buying yet again, or in my case for a third time? I have done this with at least three kits where I purchase on a whim only to decide I won't build it and sell it off, yet regretting it or deciding that I will indeed build it after all. The kit in question is the older Nichimo Nick 1/48. I'm sure the Hase kit is better, but they aren't cheap on ebay and I scored said kit for just $15.50 shipped. That was far less then what I sold it for last time. Maybe I'm just addicted to ebay. One thing is I'm a patient bidder, so I only seek deals.

Can anyone else relate to this illness?

 

Eric - Beyond building models, another interest is modeling tools and airbrushes. In the sixties I used a Binks Wren, today it's considered crude but at that time it was considered a good 'un, I liked it and it worked well for me.

But along came Badger, Paasche, Iwata and several others, I upgraded and gave the old one away to a friend to get him and his son started, but  I recalled the old Binks fondly. My friend passed away a few years ago.

When the fancier airbrushes came along I kind of quit thinking of the old one, but a couple of years ago while looking through Ebay I happened across a Wren, in a familiarly marked box. The dealer I had originally bought it from had placed his store price tag on it, I recognized that and the price. Scooped it up quickly. Paid a little bit more than the original cost, and happy to have it back.

It still looked as new, guess friend never used it or he gave it the same care I had. The store listing it on the Bay was a thrift shop, so I guess it left friends house in a garage/estate sale. No matter, just glad to have it back. Sentimental old fool I am.

Yes, Rob, when I consider the odds that I would come across it as a "side item" reference, or "link," it's like it was meant to come home. I had been looking for some Badger and Iwata parts, really lucky timing.

I have yet to sell or otherwise dispose of a kit from my stash only to go out and buy the exact same kit... BUT, on more than one occasion I have bought a second kit of the same exact one that I already have. Each time because I could not remember if I already had it or not and there it was for a good price...

Nice story. I have often thought of buying kits I grew up on, but why? Many are crude by today's standards. Some cost ridiculous money for an inferior product. I personaly like to reminisce in the past, rather then relive it so to speak.

I bought my first ever model kit I got from my parents, an old Aurora hot rod hotdog vendor truck, I bought on eBay. My dad had built it for me. It has fond memories and was the seed to my model building hobby. Didn't pay much for it, I know the original 1960s price was probably less than a dollar. Less than $10 would be my guess.

I recently found one another of the first kits I was involved in building (I think mom did most of the work), one of the old Lindberg P6E Hawks.  In a fit of nostalgia, I went and looked in the box.  Sickening yellow plastic, about 20 pieces, tons of flash.  Still, one of the sexiest biplanes out there with the black and white hawk markings on the nose and landing gear.  Thanks for sharing.
