Modeling
Posted by armor 2.0 on Saturday, February 17, 2018 9:02 AM

Anyone ever get to the point in modeling where you just wanted to quit . I'm there is just can't reach the level of modeling that I want. I'm so persistant  about getting to the level I want it almost turned into a job. The fun is almost gone. What to do.

See Tanker Builder's "Question?" thread. He examines the whole idea of what the fun of modeling is, or may be. In my experience, when it becomes more frustrating than enjoyable I just go do something else to recharge my batteries. We enjoy a semi-rural lifestyle on 5 acres, so there's always some 1:1 scale activity that needs doing. After a few hours of grunt work, the bench seems a lot more interesting!

Hope you find your fun.

Armor2.0 ;

I take it you build Armor . Have you tried something just O.O.B. ?  You know anything that isn,t an Armor Kit . Try it ,Anything at all .I think you'll find that you'll get the desire back .

If you compete a lot it can turn into a job .That's why I stopped doing competitive stuff. Now I build my own stuff , just for me .

I reached this point a few years ago. So right now, I tend to build simpler kits like Tamiya's 1/48 scale armor. I used to build a lot of 1/72, but the eyes can't handle it any longer.

I concentrate on finishing the kit. I hate to paint and weather, so many of my kits have that factory fresh look to them.

Do something different in a kit. Be it Sci-Fi/Space, Civil airliners, autos, firetrucks/semi tractor trailers, etc... There's so much out there you can do.

Step away for awhile. If it feels like works as opposed to a relaxing hobby pastime, you’re probably pushing to hard. We all improve over time, but at various rates of progression. Take a break and when the urge returns, come on back.

Sounds like your pushing to hard. As others have suggested, try somthing else. And think long term, and think long term. Aim for somthing you want to improve on, and once you have got to a stage you are happy with, aim for somthing else. Take it one step at a time.

After reading through some of your posts, it’s evident you have a lot going on in your life right now. I would suggest what others already have, step away from the hobby. Take care of some of the bigger issues that are going on right now. Once those have been taken care of and you find a greater sense of peace in your world, come back to the hobby.  Once the hobby becomes stressful, it’s just one more thing that’s beating you down.  Models will always be around, take care of yourself first my friend. Smile

Last year I gave modeling few months break as I pretty much felt like you do. No motivation, one AFV after another AFV. So I read books for a while, mostly history of former Yugoslavia. Then I went to the LHS and got an airplane and it was refreshing. So I got another airplane and later two different jeeps. So try giving it all a break for a while and/or building something very different.

Cheers...

Well, I never wanted to quit.  I got frustrated when my eyes went south for sure.  And I did decide to stop contest building as AMS essentially led me to rarely finishing a kit.  Not really by choice, but I did take a couple years off as life got busy but I'm back at it and enjoying the hobby immensely again.  I suppose the difference is I'm building models with the goal of being visually appealing... or about right.  I know I can build a museum quality model or a contest winner, and do sometimes but its no longer a requirement.  Sometimes they turn out great.  Sometimes not so much, but I'm just happy if the overall look is about right.

Building something totally out of your norm, like others have said, is a great idea.  I build 1/48 aircraft mostly and 120mm figures.  So when I was frustrated I went and built a bunch of Tom Daniels Monogram show cars.  Really fun and relaxing.  Go build a couple kits with the thought that no one but you is ever going to see them.

Thanks,

John

Yep...been there with every build that I do. There is some good advice here and I won't expound too much. I will just say that in my case, and on my next build, I won't put so much pressure on myself to get it done. That takes the fun out of it. It gets done, when it gets done. It's the journey that is the fun part for me. Heck... to be honest... I don't even care about the model when it's done. I have to resist throwing into the garbage. Lol.
