Got to watch A Bridge Too Far this weekend for the first time. The scene where the air armada flies over the English village and everyone comes out of the church to watch hundreds of C-47's fly over in formation.....that was AWESOME!
I'm getting a lot of good ideas here........
Mine that I can remember now are Kelly's Heroes, Saving Pvt Ryan, The Beast, and Air America. Another that I can't recall the name of but was a version of a Shakespeare play in "modern" England, had lots of tanks.....
Also in there: Battle of Britain, Battle of the Bulge (my dad took me to see it when I was 10 or so), Patton, The Enemy Below, Sahara (both of them), Memphis Belle, Enemy at the Gate, and a few more I'm sure.....

I gotta go with Star Wars (seriously). For earth based action I love Saving Private Ryan when I want to feel the bullets rippin by, and the Battle of Britain for some realism.

I'm going with Glory, Platoon and Full Metal Jacket. Glory is my favorite movie of all time!

Those are THE best airlift and drop scenes ever put on film... the real deal! I watch it every September.

You guys missed a couple of great ones, Where eagles dare, was mentioned once and Von Ryan's express. I watch these 2 all the time at my bench while making models.

Just got another batch of movies in to watch too. Two classics, Patton and Downfall. Also got a third which I never knew existed, but caught my attention. It is another non-typical war movie in that this is more of a movie mocking Hitler. It is Charlie Chaplains "The Great Dictator." I discovered it's existence after stumbling on a video of what I think is perhaps one of the greatest movie monologue-speeches ever:
You know guys, (and gals) I have to agree with Reasoned possibly for the same "reason". Saving Private Ryan shows some of what I would think the reality of war is. I have favorite "story book movies", but the bullets hitting the beach obstacles, the wounds, and the gore make this a more realistic depiction. I am not a combat vet so I will never know the horror, but my Dad (rest his soul) was a 1st Cav vet who hit the front lines just as the Chinese entered the Korean war and fought a retreat back into South Korea.
Other than that and on a little less serious note, although they are not movies, McCale's Navy (the series) and Hogan's Heroes rate high with me! BTW, was Dr. Strange Love a "war movie?"

Kelly's Heroes (Don Rickles and Clint the Man. One of the most entertaining war movies I've seen)
Flying Tigers (The Duke and the awesome P-40's)
The Bridge at Remagen (Great opening score and performances along with lots of action)
Fighting Sullivans (Ending gets me every time)

Saving Private Ryan Saw it when it came out when the theater had the sound turned way up. So the landing scene felt like you were really there. Plus I was 10 or 11 when I saw it so it was pretty intense.

Serious...I was a Gunny with VMGR-352 at the time when Eastwood and crew came out to the squadron one Saturday morning to film the final scene. The squadron members and our wifes, girlfriends (but not together) were ask to come in as extras. Took all day to shoot it, but it was fun and even got a check from Warner Bros.
I have 3 favs that are classics:
The Bridges at Toko-Ri with Bill Holden (was filmed on the Oriskany. I worked with a gentleman that was serving aboard the Oriskany while they filmed the movie and he met all the actors)
The Enemy Below with Robert Mitchum
The Hunters with Robert Mitchum.

Band of Brothers is by far my all-time favorite. I've watched it at least 4 times already. LOL!
I've also watched Ken Burns' The War. Although it's not technically a movie but a documentary. Worth watching though.
I also watched The Pacific but I couldn't connect with any of the characters as in BoB.
Saving Private Ryan is another good one and so was Pearl Harbor starring Ben Affleck. Love the special effects of Pearl Harbor being bombed.
I just watched Windtalkers (Nicolas Cage) for the 1st time. Not bad at all. At least good for effects and sound.
So many good movies mentioned above, but here is my list. Enemy at the Gates, in part, because I had the privilege to watch it with a sniper who was in Bagdad before Gulf 1 started, Red Tails (I know, so-so story, but the flying scenes were great and the story of the Tuskeegee Airmen has inspired me ever since I got to meet one at a local library) and Flight of the Intruder.
OMG! I forgot about Enemy at the Gates. I love that movie. atched 3 times so far. LOL! I'v eseen both Red Tails and Tuskegee Airmen. Both are good.

The one that means the most to me is "We Were Soldiers", because it's about the 1st of the 7th Cav, "Gary Owens", my brothers outfit that he was in in Viet Nam. His platoon was the one that got trapped and surrounded over night and was rescued the next day. He was wounded in the foot that night but made it home later Ok.
Others on my list are Tora, Tora, Tora, Band of Brothers, Saving Private Ryan, Letters From Iwo, Flags of Our Fathers, The Siege of Firebase Gloria, Pork Chop Hill, The Longest Day, Twelve O'clock High, The Dear Hunter, Full Metal Jacket, and the list goes on and on. Dan
