Any other scale modelers around Montreal area?

Hi guys, I am still searching for scale modelers that live on the south shore of Montreal.  Just let me know if you live there.

I got your pm, and replied.  I never got to the mega.  I was a militia sapper a long time ago, so summers at Chiliwack, weekends at Farnham and Valcartier.

I am from St-Jean-sur-Richelieu. I visit Udisco about once a month myself. The guy with the hat is Glen. You mention a model to him and he'll take you directly to where it is if they have it. I don't like the grumpy guy at the cash. I think he's the owner, because, most employees refer to him if there's a question about price.

Blake: How french is the IPMS club in Mo? I am an anglophone and have tremendous problems with french comprehension.

Are you military? Are you at the base or the college? 

 I've never been to their meetings, but if you're from outside of Quebec and military, I'm sure they would speak English to you with no problems.

Rob, I can't say about how good they are for ordering stuff as they have quite a huge selection of great kits and I was always able to find what I was looking for directly in the store.

They also carry lots of landscape kits and tools for dioramas and model trains.

As for aftermarket parts, the choice is a tad bit more limited though but still you have a good selection at very good prices.

Buff said it : prices are lower at Hobby Junction, and they have a customer support !

About Udisco, you can easily spend hours there and find treasures (like those Ben Hobby 1/100 scale aircrafts which are reboxing of old 1970's Tamiya kits, or the extremely old 1/76 scale Airfix tanks).

Sorry, I forgot to mention that Hobby Junction's prices are generally lower than Udisco's.  I generally buy 1/35 armour, and I've always found Udisco a little pricey.

They have a really good supply of aftermarket stuff.  Resin, pe, decals in decent quantity.  You can reserve stuff that will be coming in too.  I haven't had them order me anything, but I know they will do it.

Buff, Jay:  neat, I didn't know about Hobby Junction, Dorval isn't far for me...if I don't get horribly lost on the circle (has happened, lol!).  There is another pretty nice one up by cote vertu as well.

I like a good smaller hobby shop.  One I really like is in Thunder Bay, Lakehead models.  The guys are great...can talk shop all day.  I learned a number of good tips there. You won't get that as much at a big place like Udisco, that is true.

I just remember the first I time I went to Udisco...2010, doing my Xmas shopping.  I hadn't built a model in 15 years, used to love building. Nobody said anything to me, I walked around for more than an hour.  I just got hooked all over again. Bam like that. Been building like a nut ever since.

But for sure will be checking out hobby junction.

Rob: I didn't make that last IPMS meeting, had to work after all.  So I have no idea what the language the members tend to speak, but I'll bet French.  Next meeting is in a month, I guess I'll try again to go.  Anyone here a member?

Like Buff said, Udisco is this large warehouse with this almost endless number of kits available in all sizes and shapes. But their customer service is, at best, non-existent. Go there if you really really really really know what you're looking for.

Hobby Junction is more like a (literally) packed to the wall hobby shop with excellent prices, great selection of various modeling tools, and, most important, an extremely friendly staff who is sometimes too talkative (which is a good thing).

They also have a "used" section of stuff that other customers returned (which consists mostly of already opened boxes of new kits, I bought a 1/700 scale Hobby Boss sub for 3 dollars, just because the box was opened)

I live in the West Island, near the airport.  I also live 5 minutes from Hobby Junction in Dorval. It's a great hobby shop. Not nearly as big as Udisco, but a great selection nonetheless,and  they do carry a fair amount of books and aftermarket stuff Udisco doesn't carry.  And you don't have to deal with the not of this world staff that Udisco have.

hmmm...I could picture that, lol.  Guess I will find out in two weeks!  

Somebody told me that they are often fighting and arguing at the IPMS club of Montreal and that he decied he had enough.

They are such a big store. That is actually whats nice about smaller stores, you can hang out more talk models. I live just a few blocks from Udisco, I go there a lot, everyone is really nice to  me :) And they have EVERYTHING.

Serious, people not from Montreal, if you are ever here on vacation check it out!

Anyway, hellwarrior! I am so happy that you made this thread! merci et bienvenue! It is from here that I learn that we do have a IPMS club in Montreal.  I am so joining.

The next meet is Feb 21st.  If I do not get called to work that night, you will find me there! Maybe you will go too? It will be my first time at a model club...excited.

Yes you are right.  The only thing I don't like about Udisco is their customer service that is very bad.  When you ask a question at the employees, most of them will look at you like you are disturbing them.  The only employees that I saw giving good service are the tall man, asiatic look, with a baseball cap that  is always there to help you or to give you some information about the plane you want to buy and any other scale models in the store.  The other one is "Elan".  A young man that is always there when you have a question about model railroading.  If those two employes were not working there, this store would be in bad shape.

I'm in Montreal. We're so lucky to have Udisco :)

I am also using Tamiya acrylic paint but I am planning to try Citadel to see how they works.

Like I said in another post, I just started about a year ago, and still can't decide if I prefer armor or aircraft.

Also, I saw your other thread in the painting forum about Citadel paints. I like them, except for the fact that they are extremely expensive versus other paints (I use Tamiya acrylics for hand brushing but like others have said, they don't do a really good job for covering large areas).
