THINGS THAT HAVE COME & GONE IN YOUR LIFETIME

The old fashioned hobby shops before the monster malls. Nothing like a trip to the local hobby shop for that $.49, $.79, $.89 or $.98 kit. Paint that took hours to dry & the glue too.

Back then folks were courteous & kids were always seen playing in the street or in playground. Every roof had aTV antenna!!!

I miss the former five and dime stores. I worked in one during my high schools years in Ashland, NH. The store stocked models and hobby supplies, toys, dishes, cookware and just about everything else you needed. The owner always stocked the same brands. For example if you broke a plate you had for 10 or 15 years, he had the replacement. Ten years ago the building where it was located was located was sold. The new owner tripled the rent on Bailey's five and dime. Bailey closed the store as he couldn't afford the higher rent. The store has been vacant ever since. We had one here in Laconia too. It also went out of business because of competition from box stores.

That was a great business plan!

Those are great Tojo, thanks for posting them.

We had 'Crossroads Hobby' which used to be incredible, then they moved to a new location and now mostly cater to the R/C crowd. Still a nice shop but not as great as before.

And we're still lucky to have 'The Railyard' which as you can tell from the name is an awesome shop for model railroading, still pretty nice for military and autos though. Don't buy much in the way of kits there but I must have supported the owner with about a bajillion bucks of paint purchases though.

And Tojo's photo reminds me of visiting the local Ben Franklin's, Macks, Hills, and K-Mart back in the glorious '80s for Monogram, Revell, Lindberg, MPC, and Airfix kits that could be had for less than ten bucks.

I remember when I was in junior high we had a Squadron Shop in Hazel Park MI. My father and I used to love driving there and seeing the displayed models. After it closed, the guys who ran it started another hobby store, but I can't remember the name. It was located in Madison Heights, MI. This is when I really started to get involved with AM parts and decals in my early twenties. Then it closed with no notice. And I subsequently, stopped working with models.

In addition to things that disappeared, there are things that changed.  First, things that disappeared-

Margarine color packets (State laws prevented margarine from being colored yellow), low cost lightplanes, stick shift cars, photographic film, electronics full of vacuum tubes, hobby electronics kits, dramas and variety shows on radio (okay, PHC still around), street cars, Flying Models and Air Trails magazines, half-A engines, balsa static scale (i.e. solid model) airplane and car kits.

Things that have changed- language (more changes in last ten years than in any of previous decades, grammar as well as vocabulary), computers (those giant mainframes have shrunk to small tablets and laptops), disappearance of dress military uniforms except in rare occasions (funerals, etc), size of airliners (DC-3 was giant airliner when I was a kid).

Worked just as well for the strip mall owner who jacked up the rent for Venture Hobbies in Wheeling, Illinois.
Venture Hobby went out of business and the store has been empty for years.

Local hobby shop, like Willow Grove Toy store, where i bought my first model, a 69 Road Runner, long gone swallowed up by a strip mall now mostly deserted, common sense, when radio djs played what they wanted, not like todays "cookie cutter" stations, going down town to the slot car rae track to watch "races" there was a choice of three in the area where I grew up, I could go on and on, but whats the point, Crying

Why do we need an app for trolling?  Isn't a troll just a state of mind?

Do a google search for "Trolling apps", first on the list is "50+ Best Apps for Trolling People"

So, I guess its not just a state of mind any longer.

Ok, good. Thanks Goose.

I think so, Don. One I just can't associate with.

Bruce, I did the same thing and saw the same results.

PS, I get thrown off by all of a sudden we are supposed to refer to all software as "apps". To me, a piece of software that a forum management team would implement would be called "software", apps go on phones. But I've lost that battle of semantics already! Smile

Bruce- there's something thats come in my lifetime, but probably won't go in it.

Others- saccarin sweetened soda.

Beer cans that require a tool to open.

8 track tapes?

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Greg,

I apologize, and I agree, "apps" are software developed for Android/iOS (Smartphones/Tablets). I should have said that in my post. And software is applications that run on Personal Computers, or from webpages.

I'm just appalled that so many of these trolling "apps" are availble for people to use. And some of the comments of how people get great pleasure by using these "apps" to bring discomfort to others. When I did the search, I expected a couple, not a best of list.

Oh, no no no Bruce. I wasn't aiming at either your or Goose's use of the word "app". Bruce was referring to phones and so were you. I just meant in general.

It is I who am sorry, I should have anticipated this.

I'm also sorry for unintentionally hijacking your thread, John. I didn't mean for that to happen.

Back on topic on things that have come and gone, the Beatles come to mind.

In no way did I think you were singling me out. You have a very valid point; I just felt compelled to confirm it.

One thing I missed the most is low prices on vehicles. Even with price inflation adjustment, the cost of a new vehicle is way more than than what it used to be. Cars are all about electronics gadgets. I saw one with wifi in it. Wi-Fi!!!! Why? Gear shifting has gone to a knob on the dash or buttons on the steering wheel. The manual transmissions is just about gone too.

I can recall a few things that have come and gone such as:

How about 8-track tapes, anybody remember those ?

How about pulling into a gas station and having the guy come up to your car, fill her up, wash the windshield, check the oil and tire pressure? All this before gas went over a buck a gallon.

Doctors making house calls at no extra charge.

Mom and Pop drug stores selling plastic kits , having a soda and I cream fountain and having real personal one to one relationship With the customers.

Walking on the Tarmac to climb the stair ramp up to a commercial airliner, specially prop ones like a Super Connie.

I still drive a manual transmission, and refuse to buy a car that doesn't have one.

We still have a hobby shop that does things the old-fashioned way. Their basic setup is for RC cars, but they do have a nice model section and a railroad aisle as well.

Walking out to the plane? My dad was a pilot for United for thirty-six years. He started on DC-3s and ended on DC-10s. He preferred the older planes, referring to jumbo-jets as "Flying Office Buildings".

Eight-track tapes? I still remember the older four-tracks. Still, I'll take my CD collection. Better still, I mostly listen to stuff right off my 3-TB hard drive. I get nastolgic sometimes, but there are things I wouldn't want to go back to.
