Basil went 1/4", that is through the front cover of Vol. 1 and the back cover of Vol. 2.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

None - assuming the boat is floating.

A boat sits in the harbour with a rope ladder handing over the side and the bottom rung just touches the water. Each rung is 6 inches apart. The tide rises 20 inches. How many rungs will be underwater?

Because when on a bookshelf the books are spine out so to speak so the front cover of Vol 1 is right next to Vol 2

I'd never heard of a bookworm being anything other than a person lol, guess I didn't make it complicated enough eh? ;)

the first volume would be to the left of the second volume,,,,,,but, you still came up with the proper measurement

Books are stacked left to right on a bookshelf

1 grove and 2/8th of an inch as the 1st volume would be to the right of the 2nd volume and he would only eat through the 2 covers?

"Incessants" is one of this infernal phone's most distinguished stunts to date.

Nobody's gotten Basil's distance yet.

1 groove on each side, (assuming it should read 1 1/2 inches and not incessants)  3 1/2 inches but that means he started inside the book and did not eat through the front cover.

Right on the first one. Most people make it more complicated than it is.

Basil does indeed walk and eat at the same time. He does move.

I'm pretty sure LP records only have one continuous groove....and unless Basil has been walking and reading, he hasn't gone anywhere

The following two puzzlers have nothing to do with modeling, but they came to mind when I was typing a post in the Ships forum. I've tripped up dozens of college students with them. If you don't like such things, feel free to quit reading.

1. An old-fashioned LP record is spinning on a turntable. (Remember those?) It turns at 33 1/3 rpm. From beginning to end the record plays for 23 minutes. The record is 12 inches in diameter. The label in the middle is 2 1/2 inches in diameter.

How many grooves are on that side of the record?

2. A two-volume set of books is sitting on a shelf. The books are placed in the normal way, as any librarian would put them. The pages of Vol.I are 1 1/2 inches thick. The pages of Vol. II are 1 3/4 inches thick. Each of the handsome leather covers is 1/8 inch thick.

Along comes a bookworm, named Basil. Basil starts at the very first page of Vol. I and munches his way through to the very last page of Vol. II.

How far has Basil gone?

i'll check occasionally for answers. The first right ones get to split a collection of antique pop sickle sticks.

Youth, talent, hard work, and enthusiasm are no match for old age and treachery.
