Great places to eat off the beaten path

Peoria Illinois has a place called Avantis.  It is an Italian restaurant, and fairly inexpensive, and has the most wonderful sweet Italian bread and wonderful sandwiches called gondolas.  Grew up eating Avantis, and the owner went to the same church I went to.

I did eat once at a place called Hard Knox Cafe near you in Como. But I live in California, so I will get you some fish shack art soon.

For a pretty unique sandwich,try a Newark NJ Italian Style Hot Dog at Dickee Dee's.Cut open a half-round pizza bread,add two deep fried dogs,peppers,onions,and potatoes.mustard and ketchup optional.Been going there for over 50years

BBQ..

Coopers BBQ in Llano, Texas. Joe Allens, in Abilene, Texas. There are many more excellent BBQ places throughout Texas. I don't recall all the names, just the cities in many cases. Remember, when searching for BBQ. No neon signs and look for a run down looking building!

Hometown favorite is Wunsche Bros, in Spring, Texas. Not BBQ, but good chicken fried steak. Be careful though fellas. Lots of antique and craft stores right there too (sadly, not hobby shops).
