D-Day

I haven't forgotten D-Day for the last couple decades. I always quiz people - especially my wife and son what June 6th signifies. My son always gets it right for a soon-to-be 12 year old. (He turns 12 on the 28th of this month)

For tHe 7th time, I am watching Band of Brothers this week. I'm now on the episode "The Last Patrol"

If D-Day didn't happen would we have the freedom to be typing  on this forum?  Would there be an internet? Or a United States?

My uncle was in the 116th CE  attached to the 29th. 0-hour plus 1 minute. He lived until 2002.

Amen. It is crucial that we honor those great men and women from that generation. If we turn our back on them, and carelessly disregard their sacrifices and their spirit, we will deserve whatever harsh consequence may come. I fear that is happening in today's American culture. It will not in my heart, nor will it ever in my house so long as I have one

The wife and I will love to take a trip to Paris and then stay for a day or two in Normandy. I want to visit those beaches and take some time to pray at the US Military Cemetery for the 9,300+ Americans buried there.

Why not take the Band of Brothers tour instead?

Well...if not German you might speak Russian. I guess Stalin wouldn't have stopped in Berlin had the US & Co. not been in the West.

In college for a year, 1978, in Denmark. I went to Normandy on Christmas Vacation and hitched to the beaches. unforgettable.

Back in Rouen, they were playing "innagaddadavidda" over the speakers sound test.

Very distinct possibility Castel. Potentially the war in Europe could have dragged on for far longer with no no need to siphon off forces in the East to defend in the West. And IF the Soviets had eventually prevailed (after all, many folks seem to forget that Germany and Austro Hungaria did defeat Russia in WWI- it is not far fetched to think it could not have happened again), the Atlantic Wall would have been replaced by the Iron Curtain. The second half of the Twentieth Century may have looked far different geo politically.

Something to ponder when you think about the events set in motion with the decision to invade on June 6th in conditions that were far from ideal for the seaborne and airborne assault troops.  

From the lowest Private up to Ike, serious courage was required and displayed for the endeavor.

I was surprised not to see the standard movies (D-Day-6th of June, and Longest Day) on broadcast TV.

Watched "The Longest Day" with the lads on Saturday. With commentary of course

I love Captain Maud, the beachmaster, with his dog.

I remember a jump I did and one of my buddies landing near me. He did a perfect WWII style PLF and rolled onto his feet. After collapsing his canopy he turns to me, put his finger to his lips and did the "shhhh" like the guy in that movie... I laughed pretty good from that one.
