How many replies?

If the thread is shorter I will read all that is there. If the thread gets longer and longer I will tend to skim through the longer posts and read the short ones. This at least gives me some idea of what's up and I can choose to respond or move on.

I do however, follow most of the threads I am somehow involved in, if for nothing more that common curtousey. I would not care to be ignored and I am not going to treat others that way. Otherwise, why bother coming around at all?

Depending on the subject,I will check out the recent posts,if it's interesting I'll continue,if not that's it.

If it is a useful zombie thread,I see no problem checking it out or even posting something relevent.Lot of new members may have never seen the original.Off the top of my head,I know Doog has numerous tutorials floating around which are oldies but goodies.

That's why this forum needs a go to first unread reply button.  I don't follow GB threads or long WIP ones because after a time it's too hard to pick up where you left off.

I find I do drop out pretty quickly from those WIP threads that go something like- "hey, today I have posted six pictures on the left landing gear,"  then the next day show six more of the right landing gear, etc.

I don't consider it brainwashing so much as short term memory loss.  I can remember things from 40 years ago, but can't remember what I had for lunch yesterday.

Of course, I also remember my multiplication tables, so learning by rote is viable.

I don't consider it brainwashing so much as short term memory loss.  I can remember things from 40 years ago, but can't remember what I had for lunch yesterday.

I'm quickly finding that the more posts there are the more the possibility exists for more step by step processes laid out. Those I like reading. To sum up, you're not odd for not reading them, but alot of times there are benefits in taking the time to go through them. If an onlooker picks up just one tip or trick then it's worth it IMO.

I think it all depends upon the thread subject matter. If it is somebody showing a completed build, I will put in my two cents and go away, unless some further follow up seems in order. If it is a WIP or GB, I will often tag along for the whole ride. Certainly if I am running them. If it is an interestng discussion on whatever, I will particiapte as long as I have something to say for however long the topic remains interesting to me and other folks have things to say, serious or silly.

I'll also add that I'm one who's WIP's will accrue a decent size post count simply because 1.) the builds seem to last forever but 2.) I try to make it interesting.....especially to the newcomer who often asks themselves, "How'd he do that?" so I try the best I can to lay it all out.  Now to the experienced veteran modeler it's not that big of a deal and in that case I can see where they could be inclined to move on to the next thread. I have, however,  had countless members on other forums express words of gratitude for the step by step process as well as offer me advice on how to do things differently or make it easier next time round. I had to go back and look but my current build on another automotive forum has about 512 posts and is approaching 29,000 views. In it there's about 10% of posts that are in good fun but most feedback (and thats where the post  count comes in) is either encouraging or assistive and I don't respond to each individual positive comment. I try not to be a post hoarder (now that is one thing that does get on my nerves) by letting a good number of responses accrue before either responding to or thanking them. Just my

I can't say i even look at the post count before decideing if i should add anything. My own view is i think very similar to what carlos has put. If i have anything to add, i will, if i don't, i won't.

But i can't say i have seen many threads that are in the 1,000's, and those that are tend to be GB's, so there is a reason for the length. And i don't see why i would drop out of a WiP thread because of a high post count unless the build is done.

I am wondering if I am just odd about this, but I find I am reluctant to follow a thread with too many replies.  If a thread gets to about sixty or seventy replies, I ordinarily drop out. I see threads with thousands of replies.  To me this is like a cocktail party where it is hard to hear over the din.  I particularly feel this way about zombie threads where I never read the original post, but someone resurrects it years later.

So, for you folks, is there any limit to a thread where you will drop out of the thread, even if you have been following it, or am I an oddball for doing that?

 

And I personally find "zombie threads" kind of neat, like a fossil being discovered.

I have used the forum search feature when it worked.

Unfortunately, the solution seems to be a search feature for each thread...............provided the searcher is looking for specific information.

Out of curiosity, do you scan the thread just to check what type of information is posted?

Zombie threads, I love it. Just a newbies perspective, but I have been through about 5 years of posts in the general question forum and picked up a ton of nuggets following a lot of them through, tips tricks, products etc. I've posted replies to the ready room on threads I'm picking up now ( obviously ) and love how they morph into ,well almost anything. I've already Id'd a nucleus of members who can be relied on for advice, humor,knowledge and thoughtful consideration, and look foward to relying on this site for said values. I wish I had attained the level of competence and confidence I rely on here to post eye opening and mind boggling wisdom on the arcane practice of modelling,but alas, maybe in my next life. Anywho, as far as threads go when I feel a dead horse is being beaten,it's time to go for me. Please, gentlemen, keep up the posting. P.S. guess I'll check the countdown to infinity thread now.
