Great things about the hobby
Posted by Dash8 on Tuesday, December 22, 2015 9:25 AM

-it is cheap, once you get your bench and supplies

set up, this hobby is very cheap and easy on the

wallet, compared to the RC hobby, scary.

-looking up the great history on what we build

-alone time, a break away from people

-the challenge, models are hard to build perfect clean

or weathered and tough fitting parts

-brings back our younger years

-air brushing is 10 on the fun meter

-displaying the models when they are done

How about you what makes this hobby great

for you ?

Model kits cheap? Obviously you haven't seen Wingnuts kits. LOL! Don't get me wrong, there are cheap kits out there but there are lots that are reasonably priced depending on the subject and kit brand.

My reasons for this hobby:

To decompress and relive my years when I used to do model kits back in my younger years. Oh yeah, I love the challenge and read & research on the subject at hand. Most of my inspirations are found by reading different magazines/books.

Cheap...depending on how you want to look at it. Count the hours of  "entertainment" building a model...figure your dollar per hour rate....then compare it to a day at the amusement  park, movie theater, concert, dinner out, or whatever....it really is pretty cheap entertainment!

For me. I can't stand...CAN NOT STAND not having something to do. I have a NEED to feel a sense of creative accomplishment. I can't sit and watch tv, I don't like going out..."idle hands are the devils workshop"...I was in a real bad place before I picked the hobby back up 6 years ago. It has gotten me through that funk, and I lose myself in it, takes the focus off all the negative in my life. Way better than booze...cheaper...and a whole lot better for you!

And....war machines are AWESOME!!!

It's the research and fact finding that I like the must. As far as the cost....it's cheaper than other hobbies.

It's a heck of a lot cheaper than R/C and you don't have to watch it turn itself into 1000 pieces.

As others have said, it's great doing the research as I love to read too, especially History related.

No arguments there but I do get it when it come cheap in your point of view.

There are hobbies I used to be involved in and one in particular is not cheap by all means - baseball card collecting. I don't care what sport it is one collects but you can go crazy trying to find chase cards. Glad I quit that hobby a long time ago for it was costing me money every week buying sports cards hoping to get lucky pulling out that "one of a kind" chase card.

Another I used to collect is comic books For a short time right around the time trying to get all the comic book issues leading up to Superman's death.

the research (is fun)

getting involved with people with the same interests be they in person or here or other modeling forums

the price is generally not too bad (bang for your buck)

it is getting harder to do but it is still fun

yet it is important to have one or more other hobbies ..sport cards or stamp collecting just for the simple reason everyone will get into a modeling funk from time to time     it may last a week or even 2 months so it is good to have something to fall back on

thanks for listening

As mentioned previously, modeling has helped to get me through alot of funk as well. It's pretty much the Calgon (for those of you old enough to remember that) that "takes me away" when my mind looses focus on the positive and starts leaning towards the negative. It also keeps me in touch with my creative side in not only figuring out how to solve a problem but continually coming up with new ideas for realism and detail. I love this hobby and strive every day to get better and better as well as to share that knowledge with other folks in the modeling community.

I can get RC plane kits for less than I see some shelf scale models these days.  I see model ships that with all the detailing kits go for over 500.  And those subscription kits- wow, some of those are over a thousand bucks if you stick with it and buy the complete thing (these are the kits sold in monthly increments).  These sort of remind me of the smart phone racket.  You know- hey you get the phone for fifty bucks, but pay a hundred bucks a month usage fee- that is one thousand two hundred bucks a year for as long as you want the service!

I love the creativity of it (I hardly ever build as per the box art or instructions)I do all banged up or rust buckets or futuristic or try to find different ways to accomplish the same thing (like recently using gold brass or copper leaf instead of paint) I love the way it frees your imagination, it's true with modeling there are no limits, only the limits of your imagination,  and the more you imagine the better your imagination gets.
