Powerball mocks me
Posted by cwalker3 on Thursday, January 14, 2016 1:57 PM
I have played the lottery three times in my life. Twice when it first came out about 40 years ago and yesterday. I found $16 on the floor in a store a couple days ago and that night my wife asked me to buy a Powerball ticket. I didn’t even know where to get them or how much they were. So I went back to the grocery store because I knew that they sold our state lottery tickets. I blew the whole $16 on tickets. I told my wife if we won I was buying a tank to drive around on our new homestead in Alaska. Well of course I didn’t match a single number on any of the eight tickets I bought. No big deal. So today I go to the local Home Depot to pick up some doors for the house. On the way back, I see a bunch of flashing lights on the opposite side of the road. I slow down to see an M1 Abrams on a flatbed on its way to Aberdeen. Stinkin' Powerball. That tank could have been mine.

Kind of in the same tank.....Haven't played our state or the Powerball for several years.  Decided, what the heck, bought $20 worth.  Hit one number on 3 lines out of 10, and not one was the PB.  Back to Keno at dinner......Used to hit a 4 spot on that about every 3 weeks when the wife and I played, usually twice a week.  Since she has been gone (16 months) have hit one.  Same numbers we played too.  She either had all the luck or is still miffed at me......

There are three ways to increase your chances of winning.

1. Buy a ticket.

2. Pick your own numbers all over 31. That way your chances of sharing with people who use their birthdate diminishes.

3. Wlak to the place to turn it in. Your chances of dying in a transportation accident are about 7,500 times greater than winning.

All lotteries will mock you.

On a side note, I would have used that $16 to buy a kit.

I build 1/48 scale WW2 fighters.

Have fun.

Coulda purchased three kits at the November 2015 IPMS Butch O'Hare show with a dollar left over.............Surprise

OTOH, new kits are getting close to $100.

So long as the $16 wasn't needed to help pay for health care premiums............doesn't matter.

You could do like this one woman on the news this morning and set up a "Go Fund Me" page to recoup what you spent on tickets. She picked up $800 so far....

Insane amount of prizemoney (By Aussie standards anyway)  I dont think we have had one go over 100 million.  I'd be tempted to take the lump sum rather than so-much-per-year-for-the-next-thirty-years.  Anything could happen in 30 years.  This was the first time Aussies could enter this lottery, with a company winning the rights late last year.

Here's a little tidbit I'll bet most of you didn't know. Let's say you won the Powerball of 1.3 billion dollars. After taxes taken out, you decide you want to spread it out 20 years. You died suddenly 5 years later. Guess what? Beneficiaries don't get any of the winnings. The remainder money goes back to the state. That's why it's better to take the lump sum.

Out of curiosity, how does a lottery winner of millions in US currency search for honest / competent legal and financial advice?

I am presuming, of course,  that calls to Mark Zuckerberg, Oprah Winfrey, HRH Queen Elizabeth II, Bill Gates or Warren Buffett ( for example) are not returned............. Whistling

At least one guy called Donald Trump. Seriously.

You visit a local lawyer and ask them for a good trust attorney. If you've ever hired attorneys, and sadly I have often, they'll tell you right away who the allstars are.

True if you do that. But what you do is give it all away to a trust, assign an attorney as trustee, and then your heirs are safe.

I seen that. Her name was Cinnamon and she promised to spend another "fortune" trying to win he next Powerball. Her page was taken down. I can't believe people donated $800 to her.
