FSM Vets Pics and Original Pics of Military Modelling Subjects...
Posted by lonemoose on Saturday, January 23, 2016 11:36 AM

I am new but it seems there are a lot of veterans in our hobby and here on FSM. Part of my enjoyment of military modeling is that it's a way to stay connected to my 17 years in service. Whether good or bad, the experiences have informed my entire life and that continues today. Also, many relatives of mine are veterans, and sometimes I will model something from their experience. And I find modelling therapeutic. A good way for me to relax, and gives me the satisfaction of completing a mission (build).

So, to all FSM vets, let's see pics of you 'back in the day' - or 'today' if you are still in service. If possible, a pic that includes you AND a modelling subject (ie aircraft, vehicle, generator, etc).

To non-vets, post any original pic you have of a veteran family member, and again, if possible, a pic of them with a modelling subject.

And please add info re the 5Ws - who, what, when, where and why...I enjoy looking at others' military pics. Hope we have a lot of posts...

Swell idea. Do a forum search for themes like "my ride". I'm sorry i can't be more helpful, but there have been several such threads since I've been around.

1989, Corporal Sibley, 29 Palms USMC Training Area, California. 3 week exercise. 3rd BDE, 7th ID(Light) versus combined force of USMC and 82nd ABN. At that time I was a Motor Scout in 4thBN 17th RGT Scout Platoon. My ride is a gutless 4-stroke Kawasaki KLR 250cc. We painted the bikes and our helmets with rattlecans - colors and pattern determined by the environment. The pattern was loosely set by the Bike Team leader...

Thanks G. I did a search of forums but didn't find anything under a few different search terms. Hopefully the pic requirements will result in some new pics being shared and open it up to non-veterans that have veterans in their family...

That's the one I could find, and it's kind of full of holes, but interesting.

You're right, Sibs. Can't do a GB that excludes people, but it's not hard to think of a relative or friend who did.

There's a pic in there of me with my Dad in front of a B-24. No he didn't fly those, he was Guard 52-56, but he loves Liberators.

Hey GM, weren't you supposed to do an SP for that GB?

Yrs, sadly my pops descended into alzheimers and I lost motivation. I still have it though and would like to build it. I've become a better modeler for sure since then, too.

Not a Vet, myself...but I have family and friends who are.

My Great grampa fought in WW1. I have his helmet, as well as a German helmet that he brought back, in my "war room".

My Grampa (Dad's Dad)was a radio Op. on TBF's, PBY's and SNB's in WW2 (and after). No picsSad

My Dad started his Army career as a tank commander, in Germany. M60-A1's.

He then put in for aviation and got sent to Ft. Rucker (where I was born) and flew Hueys. First stationed at Ft. Knox. This pic is of one of his Hueys that had engine failure. He came down (auto rotating) in the only field for miles...took a bounce and the tail hit a truck. (circa 1976-77??)

This is the model I built for him.

Dad retired back in 94...hadn't flown since 91 (he was commander of 5/9 air cav at Schofield Bks. HI). The local air show had a Huey, and they were selling rides. I took my Dad as a surprise and got him a ride.(2013)

It was AWESOME!!! He had the gunners seat, and we flew with doors open. As happy as he was to be in a Huey again, it was very clear that he missed the pilots seat... a LOT.

My older brother is a USMC WSO in F-18D's with 2 tours in Iraq (Al Asad). 1st was with VMFA(AW)-332.

He's the G.I.B. (Guy In Back)

And, the model I built for him.

After returning from Iraq, the squadron was disbanded and he went on to VMFA(AW)-225 and did another tour in Iraq as well as WesPac..twice. Here's a couple pics from WesPac.

The drummer in my last band joined the USMC as well. He became a crew chief on CH-46's. He was at Al Asad at the same time as my bro was, back in 03-04.

The model I built for him...

He's now a crew chief on the V-22 "A$$ spray", as he calls it! Misses the Phrog big time!

My wife's brother was in Iraq also and was part of the occupation at the airport in Baghdad and also fought in Fallujah. He'll talk about Baghdad with no problem...but bring up Fallujah and he just goes pale and shuts right down....I can't even imagine.

Wow! what an awesome collection of family military service! we go back a long way too with vets from King Philips war, the Revolution and our civil war. but no WW1 or 2 vets. my g-father was in btwn world wars. oh! but my ex-wife's g-father flew B26 in ETO. i am a big fan of his service and story. he was KIA 23DEC1944. then there's me with my service in our most recent wars and first combat in the 1989-1990 invasion of Panama. i was always an 11B and ASI B4 after 1989. but for my last re-up in the MEARNG in 2010 i reclassed as a UH-60 mechanic and crewchief...

yes I have been to Germany in the Army several times. REFORGER 84, as well as a few rotations as OPFOR augmentations at Hohenfels in the late 90s. Then we rotated thru there for a month prior to going to Bosnia.

USMC 1971-1992. Been on the aviation side of the house the entire time. And during my career I had the opportunity to fly backseat in TA-4's, OV-10's, T-28's. My first TA-4 hop was with VMAT-203 doing a 1vs1 ACM. While attending an A-6 AME Framp course at Oceana  I went over to the VC-12 ops office and inquired if they take up enlisted with a backseat card. The Navy 1st class tossed me a flight schedule and said, 'sure. I can go up 2-3 times a day if I wanted too'. I flew every day after class the last two weeks I was there. On one hop I got sicker than a dog and was happy when we landed only for the pilot to hot refuel in the fuel pits and we went back up. Though I did felt better shortly after we were airborne.

The pilots of VC-12 were great, they always gave me stick time and I even flew part of a mission where for nearly an hour, Dam Creek Control was giving us coordinates routes that I would fly to. IN the pic below we were returning back to base with Virgina Beach just ahead of us.

On several of the hops I were on we would have a wingman.

I got the Classic Airframes TA-4 in the stash and plan to one day build it and depict one of the VC-12 birds.

Outstanding Marine... Great pics. The one time i called an actual airstrike (training, dummy gravity bombs, 1990) it was a pair of A6s and damn if they didn't drop smack onto the tank target i had called up with an 8 digit grid and then guided via landmarks on FM comms as they got closer and could see the impact area. two passes. blew my mind...

Started my first enlistment inthe RA on my 19th Bday. Did 4 yrs in the Army Security Agency then pulled the plug. 17 yrs later I enlisted in the 1/127 FA, KANG on a "Try one in the National Guard" program and 18 years later I pulled the plug cause it wasn't fun any more (would start to do something and 1/2 way through it, my body would say to me "What the Hell are you thinking"). Spent the first couple of years as a wireman in the commo plt and the last 16 yrs in the TOC as the Bn NBC NCO (the bugs and gas guy).  (that was my official title - I always maintained that what I really did was the TOC Special Olympic Team Coach!)

Come on Quincy! You gotta have some pics?! Post 'em. :-) I know exactly what MOPP 0 thru 4 are. I had a 1SG that actually DID have a company 'olympics' in MOPP 4 instead of regular PT - it was a half-day of horror - volley ball, basketball, and races. then we got rest of day off. it was when i was in 4/17IN(L) 3BDE 7ID(L). 1SG Mark S Ripka. Later CSM of JFCOM and CSM of AFRICOM before he retired. stay in touch with him. he's slightly awesome...

I served as an Electronic Warfare/Intercept Systems Maintainer (33W) from August of 99 to January of 05.  I did my basic at Fort Jackson and my AIT at Fort Huachuca.  After that I went to Wiesbaden Army Airfield in Germany for a couple of years and reupped to go to Fort Bragg and jump out of perfectly good airplanes.  Unfortunately, I somehow got stuck in 1st COSCOM and my unit didn't jump so I didn't get to jump.  Shortly after arriving at Bragg I deployed to Iraq for the beginning of OIF.  Turns out it was a good thing that I didn't jump because I developed degenerative disc disease and jumping would have put me in worse shape than I am now.  The first picture is me at Camp Doha the first time I went in 2002.  The second pic is the HMMWV I was assigned to while I was in Germany.  It's the Tamiya kit and it was really nice putting something together I knew about firsthand.

I have many relatives that served: my dad's cousins were both in the Army during Vietnam but they didn't go, my uncle was career Air Force, my grandfather served in the Army Constabulary in Germany during Korea, my great uncle and great grandfather served in the Army in WWII, and if you look back far enough I have an ancestor that served during the War of 1812 for about 9 days and then the war ended.

Back in the day- I do not have any pics of models I built while in service- that was a long time ago.  But here is a picture of my crew and me (I am second from left, crew commander was first from left, second crew the two on right) after an early test launch of a Minuteman ICBM at Vandenberg AFB.

I never got to launch a spacecraft/satellite, but do build some real space today.  Pic was from 1963.

I have never served, but both my dad and his brother were in the Army.  Uncle Jim was on a boat heading for Japan when the bomb dropped and changed plans.  Dad missed WWII, but ended up in Korea as crew chief on a 81mm mortor near Jane Russel Hill.  I understand that I also lost one of my mom's cousins in the Battle of the Buldge, but that was a long time before I was born.  No great pictures, unfortunately.

Thanks to all who have served and sacrificed.

Yeah I did three NTC rotations when I was Regular Army in the 80s, mid winter and mid summer- flaming hot or freezing cold. Plus many drills there when I was Cal Guard. Yes, playing OPFOR is much more fun than being on the other side and evaluated on EVRYTHING you are doing.

Hohenfels is one of the remianing major trainig areas in Germany, and is pretty much the USAREUR equivelant of NTC, just nowhere near as big. Supposedly the German army used it before WWII as a Panzer taining area, and we kept it in the same role afterwards. it is near the Czech border in between Nuremberg and Regensburg.

I have yet to make it to Berlin... (I have been to and thru Tokyo though!), But I have been to Munich a few times. The forst time being most memorable as I was cross attached to the Bundeswehr 1st Gebirgsjager Divsion, 223rd Panzer Grenadier Battalion, who had their Kasserne on the edge of the city and it just happened to be at the beginning of the Oktoberfest. Train in the day and in the nighttime... Beer

I have plenty more photos, but very few are scanned...
