Wow Cobra... Everybody knows Memorial Day is the start of summer and BBQing gets into full swing. Have you ever think for one minute maybe... just maybe the vets living or dead would like it to remember and appreciate them by throwing a good old fashion BBQ in their honor?

I know both my grandfathers who served (WW1 and WW2 respectively) always loved a BBQ.

If it makes you feel any better, I spent my Memorial Day doing stuff around the house. I still had my little BBQ with my family and had a fine time.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it. LOLOLOLOL!!!!

Working on a couple of military kits, and remembering those that gave all in that machinery so I can do what I do.

Replaced the flag out front as it was getting a little faded, and will get the old one to the Legion for their yearly retirement ceremony.

Big thanks to all the vets here. Blew most of the weekend screwing around with stuff around the house. Working today on Memorial Day but when I get home hopefully I'll have a little time to work on a 1/72nd Revell B-17G a friend asked me to build for a former crewman he knows from the local vet clinic.

Memorial Day, or "Remembrance Day", always reminds me of hot days visiting cemetaries to place flowers on graves; of white marble chips that covered the grave sites; of being uncomfortable in a tie;  of family gatherings at my aunt's house and the meals that were served; of trying to talk to adults about things that I was interested in, but realizing they didn't pay any attention to children;  trying to listen to their stories but being completely lost, except for the part about two of my uncles who fought in the American Civil War (or the War Between the States) on both sides, and deserted;  of being so bored that I looked forward to going home; sleeping in the car during the long
drive in a time before the interstates had been finished.

This is my Memorial Day.  I hope you have a great one.

Sent an e-mail to my brother thanking him for his service as I always do. Spent the rest of the day out under the hot sun power washing my home getting the green algae off. Still have more to do tomorrow.

Spending time with my kids and my grandchild. Reflecting and saying a prayer for those that  made the ultimate sacrifice. My flag is out and flying.

Well, honestly I WILL be barbecuing as my family INSISTS on it. However, I won't be celebrating memorial day as most people do which is only a reason to get stuffed, eating garbage, getting drunk, high, stupid, shooting fireworks, whatever. No Sir, I'm going to be remembering my loved ones that have passed. I'll celebrate their lives, and the memories that I shared with them. THIS is what memorial day is truly about. I'll celebrate the veterans that fought for this country the way I always have: with my service, my prayers, my monetary contribution, my time, and any other way I can for those who fought whether they lost their limbs, or lives in combat. I'll remember them on armed forces day as well - that's what it's intended for. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

I'll be working. And thinking while I have the time to do so.

Sit quietly and watch the grandchildren play.

That's what always reminds me, it was worth it.

Bought a book called "Masters of the Air" to read before the upcoming HBO mini series The Mighty Eighth that's due to be released sometimes in 2017. The mini series is based off this book.

My day will be pretty much like any other: Doing historical research for an ongoing thread on the 100th anniversary of World War One, building models, maybe watching a movie, a bike ride later in the day.

Today, by request of my church, I will put on my jungle fatigues and greet the people as I usually do, but this time as a reminder of the day.

When I get home I will work on my models for our upcomming Modelpalooza.

Tomorow I'm planning on attending the ceremonies at Glenn Haven Memorial poark and then back to my building.  No BBQs or things like that.  I have a new flag that I've been flying all week and that's about it.

I just discovered that I need to but new laces for my jungle boots since my cats found them and chewed off the plastic tips.

Memorial Day
Posted by Tanker - Builder on Saturday, May 28, 2016 8:20 AM

 Well ;

Here we are going to another Memorial Day .What are you going to do ? Personally , I am going to the Alamo and then the war Memorial Cemetery and pay my respects .To those who fought and gave their all .

Why , Well , I have had 73 good years growing up in , to me, the greatest nation on earth . Sure she's made mistakes , what nation doesn't ?

Thing is  , back in 1943 there were men on the front fighting while I was being born , had it not been for them I would've grown up in East Germany maybe .

But no , Thanks to the sacrifices they all made I am an old proud American . I will not celebrate this day Buying a new grill , lawnmower or some such nonsense. I will remember with all my heart those who made my freedom possible .

Thanks , You Men and Women in uniform and those who stepped up before you . I love you all .  Tanker - Builder                This is a heartfelt Post Script- This morning , my , neighbor , who is a younger vet, did this . he called me at 0630 this morning and invited me down for our usual coffee .

When I got there , rain pouring and thunder echoing in the background and I stepped to his door .Ramrod straight with a salute ,he held . at Attention . I returned his salute and replied to his actions with a " Carry on Private " .

He dropped his salute and embraced me as a son does a father and we both shed tears for those who couldn't be here and those maimed in our defense at all times .

This was with the placing of his six month old son in my arms , a poignant reminder as to what Memorial Day is about .We Shall be visiting the Viet Nam Veterans Moving Memorial later today . I have something to do and I cannot do it alone . He will be my rock for this .

May we Never Forget those who made our lives possible .  Tanker - Builder
