WW II Base Memorials
Posted by goldhammer on Tuesday, May 31, 2016 3:14 PM

Bish's pictures in another thread got me digging back in a file and deciding to post up some pictures of a base memorial here in Oregon, at Madras in the central part of the state. It was a B17 and fighter training base during the war.

If anyone wants to join in with others, you are more than welcome to post up pictures of any WW II base memorials honoring those that served there.

Great idea for a thread. Just to expand a bit on what i said in the other one. I come from east Anglia which during WW2 was the home to many airbases, British and American. And there are memorials all over the place. Even though many bases have been plowed over, you can be certain there is one some where, often in the loical village.

But my own personal interest is in my home county of Norfolk. During WW2 Norfolk had more bases than any other county in the UK, 37. And just to give you some idea, Norfolk is just a bit smaller than Delaware. It must have been some sight when all those B-24's were taking off. As part of that interst, i am aiming to build at least one aircrfat modl from every one of those airfileds, from WW2 to the present day. Alongside that, i aim to get photo's of all the memorials. So far, i have the grand total of 2.

The first, what i coinsider one of the nicest memorials i have seen, is at the old Snetterton airfield, home of the B-17's of the BG.

And the second is at Bodney, home of the 352nd FG, who first use P-47's but are best known for their blue nosed P-51's. This part of the old base is now a British army training camp. The old huts are still used for accomodation. I stayed there a number of times while serving, but only got round to taking these after i came out of the army. This is a more common type of memorial you will see in the region.

I hope to have some more soon, and look forward to seeing otehrs.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

Building a kit from your stash is like cutting a head off a Hydra, two more take it's place.
