BATTLESHIP
Posted by SprueOne on Tuesday, July 5, 2016 7:23 PM

Box Art

The discussion topic, Table top gaming by Mississippivol sparked this idea for a thread here.

Several years ago my buddy moved away so he proposed an idea to me. To play Battleship through email. We plotted our fleet grid on graph paper and emailed our strikes consecutively in turns. I know it's not for everybody but I thought it was fun.

This was all honor system of course and since there was no pay ins or pay outs, there wasn't any benefit in cheating. It was all just for fun.

^ My graph paper plots and strikes and 'enemy' movements ^

Most members here probably remember this game but the following images are for those who are unfamiliar with this game.

These are the traditional ships from the game but they can be any sort of fleet from Sci-Fi space ships, Fantasy Pirate ships, WWII . . . etc.

The winner of this round will call out the next challange in PM preferred. The member asked to the challange can accept or decline in PM then.

This is an open forum and any members are free to comment, encourage, advise and watch the battle.

Mississippivol has agreed to this challange with me so gets first strike turn.

I will say, though, that I remember the patrol boat being the destroyer and the destroyer was a cruiser when I was a boy.

Yeah. This latest edition that I got for the lads was the first time I had seen the current descriptors.

ok, that explains it. The ship description chart above is from the version I have. It's a 'Talking Battleship'. Electronic with sound effects from the 1990s.

B3 = torpedo miss.

BTW, how does a torpedo work? It there a little engine inside or is all the propellant energy from the launch?

Btw, in this game, the attrition to both sides is huge, at least in past games. What's the least amount of ships you've lost in a win?

The least ever for me was 3.5 ships. Average is 4 and sometimes, just 1 red peg left. Yes, I agree massive attrition.

G1 = miss

I looked up Wiki on Battleship Game this morning and read up about it a little.

This type of 'pencil and paper' game play can translate 'ships' to 'tanks and APCs' or 'mortar positions' or 'cities and towns' and etc. Then played the same way.
