Any Vehicle/aircraft named SOPHIA?

Any Vehicle/aircraft named SOPHIA?

I have 3 daughters, and am looking for an aircraft or vehicle named or nicknamed or tagged Sophia.

I already have a 1/48th Betty & Tony (Toni) & even know of a Mosquito marked J(0)NA (me) but not of a Sophie or Sophia, any ideas here?

Don't know of any aircraft or vehicles, but didn't the UN have a big operation known as SOFIA recently?  Maybe do a craft from that.

IIRC, Hyundai or Kia had a vehicle that the pronunciation was that, spelling not sure.  Doubt there ever was or would be a kit of it though

Cosest I know of is the IJAAF Sonia Type 99 Assault Plane. A light attack aircraft used thru much of WWII.

What about the NASA airborne observatory? It's technically SOFIA, though. It's a shortened 747 with a hole cut in the side for the telescope.

For some reason I can't get a link to copy down. You might be able to Google it, though.

edit--pretty sure I saw a kit of it, too.

Finescale covered this in their September 2010 edition.

http://www.finescale.com/online-extras/2010/09/nasas-airliners

Boeing 747SP – Known as SOFIA, NASA’s Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy uses a modified 747SP fitted with a large infrared telescope in the rear fuselage. A rotating door on the port side of the rear fuselage opens to give the telescope almost 60 degrees of view. The aircraft is in the final stage of testing before starting scientific missions; the goal is to fly three or four nights a week when operational. NASA’s 747SP entered service with Pan American World Airways in 1977, then was sold to United Airlines in 1986. In the mid-1990s, the aircraft flew its last revenue flight before being sold to NASA.

Modeling: Welsh Models produces two kits of the 747SP in 1/144 scale, but they would have to be modified to produce the SOFIA aircraft. I haven’t seen decals for it.

You coiuld always delve into the worlds of Science Fiction and scratch building and design and build something.  Then name it yourself.

You could use this spelling as it IS the correct Franciase spelling of it. What we stupidly and wrongly call "French" as their is truly no word for it in their language. Sophia is the orginal French spelling, and Sofia is the Italian version of it although misspelled. There were plans for an S.S.Sophia aircraft carrier, but it never came to light since the idea was when they first started naming aircraft carriers, and battleships, etc. that it would be more feasable for whatever reason to name them for the state names rather than females which is true maritime tradition. It was always considered bad luck to have a woman on board a vessel, but good luck to name it after one. Figure that out! Well any way, if you want to name it this there's no problem with it - it's one of the most beautiful names ever!

Thanks for all your thoughtful input. Perhaps I'd better refine my search terms:

any Vehicle OR Aircraft OR Ship carrying the Name OR Nickname of Sophie/Sophia/Sofia  THAT is available as a KIT (pref 1/48th)

WW2 Aircraft was my first thought, eg along the lines of Chuck Yaegers' Glamourous Glennis('s), but Colourful WW2 Aircraft isn't my first forte,  hence my asking for input.

Anothor forum have suggested a Sdkfz250 or PZKfwIV or V carrying the name Sofia which I will investigate, but more suggestions please

Or even: any decal sets with the name (any spelling) in 1/48th I I'll look for the kit to match

I should have mentioned: I've done commemorative builds for friends and family. I typically will either use their name in the pilot's name placard near the canopy (on modern jets) or I will do some custom nose art. I either draw or paint it on by hand, or make up the art in an image program and print it on decal paper. Anyway, this is just what I do, as a suggestion to keep your brainstorming going. Hope it helps.
