I saw the Belle several years ago along the Mississippi in Memphis. It was a shame to see her condition and how Memphis just let her go before she was moved to Dayton.

It sat out at Memphis International til the mid 80's when the Air Force demanded it to be put in a better environment. It got moved to Mud Island under cover, and it might had been ok except birds were nesting underneath the roof and the droppings were corroding the metal. There was a local group trying to get it restored and removed to a more museum type of building near Germantown before the Air Force reclaimed it, but funding never materialized, especially from the local governments. The vandalism was bad at the airport, and when it was sitting there someone decided that it was a good idea to put concrete in the tires back in the day to keep it from blowing away .

Didn't know about the concrete in the tires thing. Seems there would be a lot of better ways to secure it. If I recall correctly the belle flew into saint Louis under her own power. But I could be wrong.it was a long time ago. Mike
