Local Air Show last weekend

PJ I had a wonderful time at the air show. I miss the old days here of having several a year, each less than an hours drive away... Ah well, it's nice to have a local show again.

I miss the days of the HUGE air shows at Homestead AFB in S. Florida. That was an all day event with TONS of aircraft on display and non stop flying demonstratins and flybys. Then we had The Blue Angel show on the North part of the county at Opa Locka Airport which was a military site back in WWII. The Blue Angels show was a special treat cause my mother in law lived about 4 miles west of the airport and we could watch the Blue's A-4s practicing at low level over our heads days before the show, sort of a free preview.

Yes, I was just reading about "That's All Brother" last nite. The article that I read said she was the lead C-47 for the drop. But that would make her the ship that carried Capt. Lillyman's Pathfinder team, and the markings don't jive for that.

 

And I just found the info on the aircraft that carried Capy. Lillyman's Pathfinder team. This was the lead aircraft for US Airborne into Normandy, serial number 42 93098. And color footage exists of it on that momentous occasion!

Sadly, the aircraft did not survive the war like "That's All Brother". 098 was shot down on the second day of Operation Market Garden.

Another C47 is undergoing restroation for CAF - "That's All Brother"  an actual D-Day veteran.  They are hoping to have her back in the air for the 75th D-Day anniversary doings.

 

Well I found out the story on "Thats All Brother" She was the lead aircraft for Mission Albany, the drop of the 101st into Normandy.

I hear you, I tossed a few bucks at her as well.  Gave one of the hats to an old airborne buddy from the '60's/'70's and explained what it was.  Happy as a clam in wet sand with it.

Hey Stik,  great pics!  The show must have been awesome.  Ahhhh, the C-47.  I love seeing them flying.  You mentioned "That's All Brother".  It has a great spot in my heart.  My grandfather passed away in January of this year.  He was a radio operator on a C-47 stationed in England during WWII.  Shortly after he passed, I got a thing in the mail about "That's All Brother" asking for donations to help restore.  My sister and I instantly knew what we had to.  We donated money in his name and they put his name in the log book.  So to see a 47 flying....man, that's gorgeous!  Thanks for posting Stik!

Nice.  Saw Blue Angels back around '70, T-Birds in '73 and '75 at Beale and Shaw respectively.

Did a 950 mile drive to Pensacola to watch the Blue Angels fly their homecoming show Veterans Day.  There was also a jet powered glider, the AT6 demo team, several aerobatic pilots and the F16 Viper demo team.  A great show

Yes, the Super Hornet did one of those from inland high speed roof top level lit afterburner passes... It was awesome!!! 

We have a show in Alantic City N.J. every year over the beach. We get a bus ride to the beach, watch the show, take a walk on the boardwalk and then take the bus home. It's usually a lot of warbirds. They usually fly in formations with the jets to accompanying cheers from the crowd. The jets used to go down the beach and out of sight for a minute or two then come from behind the beach and pass over our heads from between two of the largest casino/hotels. For years they did this and everyone loved it but they pulled the plug on this stunt. I guess they thought it was a little too dangerous.

Our area also had an airshow, which surprised me.  I was shopping in the area of our county airport, and saw a group of T-6s that constitute a demonstration team flying in our area.  I thought maybe they were just practicing.  About a half hour later I was driving from my town, Coon Rapids, to Anoka.  I saw the planes orbiting downtown Anoka, and turn on their smoke generators.  Wow, there is an airshow, and it is over downtown Anoka- why?  It is nearly two weeks to armistice day!  Then, I realized, it was time for the annual Halloween parade! 

Anoka bills itself as the Halloween Capitol of the World!  This big celebration has been going on for many decades.  The celebration gets bigger each year.  This year they added the airshow to the event!

Sounds like a great airshow, stik. Lookng at the C-47. I'm going to assume the W6 is for Whiskey 6. We have W7 (Whiskey 7) on display at Geneseo Air Museum in Rochester, NY area.

I'm glad you guys like the photos! It has been too long since I have been to an air show. Last one I think was at Edwards in '97 and Yeager did a 50th Anniversary Mach buster flyby in an F-15. Once upon a time here we could go to El Toro, March, or Edwards in an hour or two at most. Saw the Thunderbirds, the Blue Angels, and even a Canadian team in Voodoos! With a bit longer drive there was Pt Mugu or Miramar. But then came the BRAC and closures... It was great to see this stuff again! I found myself yelling and cheering after  the afterburner flybys when all the other folks were cringing at the noise...

Max, thanks for the ID on those aircraft. I was pretty sure that they were Eastern European, but could not ID the type. They still remind me of Panthers.

PS--the jet team seems to be L-39s, a trainer/light attack aircraft built in Czechoslavakia.

Thanks for the great  the pics Stik,it's been awhile but I used to go to McGuire AFB in NJ all the time.Saw the Thundwrbirds,Blue Angels,and the Italian Team.

You keep getting scr#wed out of Nats out there, so I'm sure happy to hear about this nice local show.

Looks great Stick, an airshow judt isn't complete without an AT-6 and the Thunderbirds or Blue Angles.
We are pretty much done with airshow seasion for this year.
