Yep, i didn't know much about his life until reading about him in the news today.

It's incredible the how much some people achieve in a lifetime - really awe-inspiring.

We owe John Glenn our heartfelt gratitude, he helped to defend our nation, served in the Senate, flew in space as a crewmember, and demonstrated that advanced age did not disqualify someone from serving, wherever they are capable.

He lived a life of great and honorable service, one that adults respect and kids dream about.

Cleared for takeoff, Major Glenn.

Yeah, gee whiz I'd forgotten about his combat service. He had guts enough to me to allow himself to be strapped on top of an ICBM and shot into space and then fall like a meteor back though the atmosphere. Sure the Russians had done it a bunch of times and Al Shepard and Guss Grissom preceded him but still it was as dangerous as anything.

When he ran for President, he was the only candidate who flew into the airport at which I worked that I didn't get to meet. (sad face).

For those modelers who want to build their own tribute to Glenn, Horizon models sells a very nice 1:72 Mercury- Atlas.  It can be detailed as any of several shots, including MA-6, Glenn's first orbital shot.

The wood base was a personal addition, but everything above the base is the kit.
