The local bird cage liner had an article on the top D-Day movies.

In addition to the obvious top two, they listed "The Big Red One", which I've never seen.

 

 

 

 

 

Its not a great film, but not a bad one either. The Reconstruction version is better in the D-Day sequence than the original theatrical release. The low budget and resultant filming locations and props/scenery do detract from what could have been a great film. But then again, Sam Fuller’s war movies were more about the basic story and characters than any grand sweeping view. Definitley a good look at life in a US Army Infantry rifle squad.

 

 

 

 

Very true Stik....very low budget, but worth watching.

 

 

I like the fact that it’s semi auto biographical. One of the four rifleman, Zab, is Sam Fuller’s alter ego . Just like Eugene Jerome is to play write Neil Simon. 

The final battle sequence of the film and its aftermath are so powerful. Years later I saw an interview with Fuller where he described some of those events. That’s when you realize how personal the film was to him.

Well for the Memorial Day week & weekend I was into:

Black Hawk Down and the Band of Brother mini series.

Now that D-Day is arriving I know I'll have a selection from which to watch:

Saving Private Ryan

Battleground

Wake Island

The Patriot

Platoon

Flags Of Our Fathers

Sands of Iwo Jima

We Were Soldiers

and of course The Pacific mini series.

It all depends on how I feel. Enjoy fellas.

 

Those were all on TV memorial day weekend ??

would have enjoyed  Band of Brothers.I thought the Sundance lineup was pretty good for just one channel.
